I am not sure I understand the premise of this thread nor do I really understand the direction it has taken.

What I do know is that the legend of Kurt Cobain has grown exponentially since his death/suicide/murder/alien abduction. Back in high school, dating myself a bit, I remeber when Nivana hit the scene and it seems to me the only people who really took to the Nevermind were the depressed losers who moped around and dressed like bums anyway. They didn't need help being depressed and oppossed to during the 80's when music was about partying and having fun now someone was writing songs that related to people that were depressed. I remember thinking that Soundgarden, Smashing Pumkins, and Pearl Jam were far better "grunge" bands with far more important music. I believe that in retrospect that also proved to be the case when looking at the music. The media for some reason hoped on the Nirvana thing and after Cobain's death he and Nirvana became a martyr.

I'll throw a name out for consideration...Slash!!!!

Evidence:
Obvious Icon.
World Renown.
Played on huge albums both as a solo artist and band contributor.
At last count 3 signature LP's and at least 1 signature amp.
Kick $@! guitar player.

Let the fight start over that name kiddies.

Since I'm 33 do I have to wear suspenders?

This is all a matter of opinion. I was part of the Nirvana generation and his works didnt move me or change me, same with more people I know than those who were changed by him. His "beautiful displays of melody" is highly debatable, i never heard anything of the sorts from him. His live performances, meh...although unplugged was pretty good. Again, you really like the guy and that is cool, but dont mistake your love for him into "everyone" or an "entire generation" holding him in the same regards. I dont see it that way and his big fans aside I would have to wager that most of the "Cobain generation" feel the same about him, his career and his works. I say this all respectful of your opinion, of course.

Jack White, in my opinion, was the last great guitarist

Jack White, great guitarist? the last one? Now granted I typically dislike John Mayer but Mayer and White shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence let alone with the words "last great guitarist" in that same sentence.

Joe Bonamassa
Kenny Wayne Shepard
Derek Trucks

all are greater guitarists than Jack White and that list can be added to with at least 10 more.

I guess I can't see where you are coming from with such an assessment of Jack White's guitar playing skills alone. But oh well...to each his own.

Kurt Cobain. I shall battle anyone that disagrees.

-Member of the 27 club
-People dressed like him
-50+ million albums sold
-Crappy player, could not sing worth a damn. 50+ million albums sold
-People think he is still alive / was killed / killed himself / other conspiracy theories
-People hate him a lot

A rockstar has to have a personality. Kurt had one, it was messed up and for that he was awesome.

RIP!

this (granted i like his voice... to each his own)

Cobain and Jack White?

I don't get it, never have and never will. Cobain will always be debated, that's fine, but how Jack White is considered a guitar god is beyond me! :)

I think Julian Casablancas is a good contender, theres a new strokes album coming out in 2011, I think.
Caleb Followill from kings of Leon?
or
Alex Turner from the arctic monkeys?

There are certainly a few prats out there that'd gladly nominate themselves for the title, namely Brandon Flowers;
'We want to knock Led Zeppelin and Nirvana off their pedestals', which wouldn't be quite as unreasonable if it was to come from someone with any talent.
KOL sold out too fast, i did consider the artic monkeys fellow but no one really knows him and the only huge hit they ever had that spread pretty big was "I Bet You Look Good On the Dance Floor", i just think Julian is our generation Jim Morrison except more sober

late 80's, early '90s, just put it this way, grunge crushed their whole hair guitar power ballad sexist rock star cliche thing, jack white is one of the only guitarists that plays something besides basic chords over and over, he has a beautiful style, plus i never said he was a guitar god but in my generation next to John Mayer's sarcastic and humurous song writing and amazing playing, hes the best we've got!

Pain it Black is good, but they need to slow it down a little if they want a larger audience; Cage the Elephant hasent sold out yet plus they got a new album coming out

dunno about your area, but in my area there is some traces of a cross between punk rock mixed in with a whole bunch of other rebelious genres. very little though. country music rules the underground here

Type in Sliver on YouTube, or Polly, or Lithium if you need examples of beautiful melodies an obviously your and blues enthusiast, look up Black and White Blues or his cover of "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", he was progressing to a raw howling blues sound near the end of his life, and for his defining live abilities just go rent "Live At Reading". I say all of this in respect of your taste in music and opinion.
