How are you doing mate. Where in Australia do you live?
Reason I ask is that I was reading in Icelandic media that they were evacuating people from lowlands in the north west of Australia because of heavy raining and floods. Is that anywere near you?

Stay safe mate.

Blimey O'Riley... er, Riley. Your country's really been copping it recently, hasn't it? A decade of drought, catastrophic bush fires, deadly flooding... and to cap it all, the cricket!

[Smug grin] :D :D :D

Cheers - C

Hey everyone - thanks for the good thoughts. I'm glad you're doing well too Riley.

We're fine here, just lots of rain but no flooding in our part of town. My wife and I are headed over to a friend's place shortly to give them a hand, but even there it's just water damage downstairs. Nothing compared to people further up the coast. I was on the phone to my Dad yesterday and we've had to cancel our trip to go see him. He's cut off (but safe and not in any danger) and they're evacuating people from towns a bit further North than he is.

I feel for the people who've lost everything, they're sleeping on mattresses on the floor in school halls and wondering what happens next. But I'm very happy to see the police have started charging people who ignore road closure signs and try to drive through roads that are cut by the floods. They often seem to be rubber neckers and end up stuck in the middle of the river or creek expecting to be rescued. The emergency services folks have better things to do helping the residents.

Dorothea Mackellar wrote My Country in 1904(?) and the second verse is very popular here:

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror—
The wide brown land for me!

And yes - it keeps our mind of the cricket Ceri :( I've actually taken more interest in baseball lately!

Yeah - I suspect that might be part of the problem for Australia cricketwise these days, d'ya think? Shane Warne could spend his spare time playing golf and other stuff, but not many others can get away with having their concentration diluted that way. Stick to the senior game, that's my suggestion! :D

Having said which, you will no doubt spank our behinds in the Fifth Test and wipe the happy smiles off our faces...

And seriously for a second: good to hear that you, Riley and others are OK. It looks truly terrible on the telly: good luck with the elements to everyone in Oz. On which, we haven't heard from Forum user Mondo for a while? Hope he's doing all right too.

Cheers - C

Glad to see that you guys in Australia didn't get nailed with the horrible effects of the weather, keep safe and keep us posted.BTW I have many extended family members in Tasmania and I think they were spared the brunt of the damage.

We've had plenty of road closures and some water in downstairs areas of houses mostly due to creeks and poor drainage. The Brisbane river hasn't burst its banks though and the dams upstream still have room for floodwater. The real damage is further north where rivers have overflowed - in many areas once that happens it just keeps going.

Thanks CC :) Hey Riley - I agree with you about living in Tasmania!

The State government won't be able to put a figure on the cost for a while. Apart from the obvious immediate impact to lives and property there's also repairs to buildings, roads, railways, etc. and the damage to crops and livestock. For those that would like to see - here's one of the photo galleries of the floods on a news site here:
