Hello. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the amp settings are for The Boys are back in town by Think Lizzy. As well, do any of you know what my guitar should be tuned to? Any other specifics I need to know?

I really appreciate any help you can give. Thank you

Hi MarleyRedemption,

Great song! What kind of amp and guitar do you have? For that matter, what amp and guitar did Scott Gorham, or Brian Robertson use? I think that they used Les Pauls and Marshall amps.

Alright. I have everything tuned perfectly I believe. Or at least close to perfect. I still don't think I'm getting the distortion right. Or what ever the distorting sound is in the song.

For the record, I am using a fender Stratocaster. My amplifier is a Cort CM10G.

I think the main issue is the amp itself. I can't get the sound out of that.

And please forgive me, I am fairly new to all this.

Thank you again.

P.S.
I am pretty sure they were using Gibsons. I have no idea what kind of amps they were using.

Hi Marleyredemption welcome to the forum, you'll never replicate the tone of Thin Lizzy with such a small amp,I imagine that it only has a small speaker and to come close to recreating the tone you at least need an amp with suitable volume and speakers to move a lot of air. It's a great song to get off even if you can't exactly nail the tone good luck. BTW using a Strat instead of an LP will also limit your sound reproduction.

You are probably right. As soon as the gibson popped into my head I realized it is probably a lost cause. Especially for a beginner such as myself. I agree that the amp is smaller than anything they were using by I think the amp itself could probably replicate the sound close enough. Not perfect but decent enough for just sitting around and playing.

I guess I should probably find a song that is better suited for a strat huh? I don't know if I'm allowed to change the topic like this, forgive me if I'm out of line, but you guys wouldn't happen to know a good song for me to give a go at would you?

Thanks again guys.

I wouldn't let the guitar or amp limit the songs you want to learn. You will eventually/hopefully learn your own tone :)

You can still play their music even thought you're on different gear. You may not be able to copy their tone, but in the process you may find a tone that you rather enjoy. Music is not all black and white, and I find that most of the fun is in the gray areas. There is no wrong or right when it comes to tone.

I agree with the others, you won't get their sound exactly, with the gear that you have, but you can still play their songs. I am not familiar with your amp controls, but try turning the mid pot way down, and the bass and treble pots turned way up for a more "scooped" tone. Add a little gain/drive/distortion if you have it. Use position 2 or 4 on the pickups selector switch on your Strat. :)

You are kind of fighting an uphill battle if you want to copy Thin Lizzy's sound. Even if you would have all the right gear it would still be hard because of the fact that the lead guitar is in many layers on most of Thin Lizzy's albums. Even though Thin Lizzy only had one Lead Guitarist Scott Gorham they invented the Twin Lead Guitar sound by recording the lead guitar and then record a similar lead guitar and layer it over so you would get that wall of guitars sound.
So that guitar you hear in Thin Lizzy's songs are actually the same guitar recorded multiple times. But hey it can be fun to learn songs even if you don't get the original sound, it's makes it your rentition of the song. Have fun mate.
