Yeah, I'd say it's around 90% technical skill. I can take my tele into a twin with slapback delay and compression and it sounds nothing like country, rather something you find on the ground in the country (Sounds like $#!+ >_>).

I don't know much about the technique, but those were some great sounding licks. Thanks for sharing the vid. I love that tone. 8)

Good chicken pickin is something that fascinates me as well, I am working on it. As for a good example, well here's one...which Mr. Gill took part in as well

Here's 3 of the best, Gill, Lee, and Gatton. Love this vid as well. I still think Gatton is the man.

I`m trying to learn the " Chicken Pickin " technique also. The part I`m having a problem with is figuring out which strings to use the pick on and which fingers to use to pluck the bottom strings with and where that breaking point is. I`ll be relocating sometime this coming year. Once I`m settled in I`m going to look for an instructor in this techniqe.

IMO, "country" tone is 92.98 percent technical skill.

if this were true why bother with chasing a country tone?
just practice country picking and you'll have it, at least 92.98%
of it. you will be so much closer than those who have went and spent
a fortune on their rig.

Chicken pickin' is one thing but I like to hear all those steel type licks and lots of those guys have B-benders on the guitar,I believe...you are limited in trying to duplicate some of those licks if you have a straight guitar.

Don't think I have ever showed the forum my Telecaster before.... and no, I am obviously not much of a country player.

Note to self: actually think before you play.

I think you sell yourself short, my slightly frozen Canadian friend. Your "country tone" is there. :!:

...and without trying to sound condescending, your chicken-pickin'/yee-haw/country playing skills are much more than adequate. You sound better than many "true" country artists I've heard/seen. If you keep working on those skills, you'll have them killed in no time.

You're doing fine--keep it up!

The so called Country Tone is much more about clean picking, invaluable in that is practice on an acoustic where fluffing notes just isn't going to cut it.
After that guitar, amp selection does have a slight variable :) but most of the country prickers I've seen live have serious chops, only attained by many hours in the woodshed.
I got to attend a workshop last year with Doyle Dikes at Wakefield Music, the beauty was that there was only 20 people in attendance. KIller, I went home and left the fiddle in the case for the night.
