In the 70's an Australian music shop sent a 60's Strat over to Japan and asked a maker to copy it precisely.

What came back was perfect in most respects, including the seafoam green colour. They sent a few more Fenders over, and soon you could buy 'Teles' including bound Customs, 'Strats' with rosewood and maple boards and I think a Jaguar.

These are so good people still look for the MIJ ones, which are close enough to a real one in playing and sound to be usable for gigging. That's where the name comes from - the 'profile' is like a real one. Fretboards including boatnecks, Klusons, alnico pickups, the whole lot. I have a Profile 60's-type maple capped neck with soft V that is magic.

In the 80's and later Profiles were made in Korea. They are not bad, but not as good or close as the MIJ ones. Probably similar to Korean 80's Squires, which weren't bad.
