ok there is several redius to choose from.
any of the educated ones want to teach us which radius
is better for what? maybe you can even give us an example of which
radius can be found on what guitar.
very hard to get the different radius necks side by side to compare.

Huh?

Go to your local GC with a good selection of Strats and ask to see a MIM '60s Classic re-issue (7.25" radius), an American Standard (9.5" radius), and an Eric Johnson signature model (12" radius). Those are the principal fretboard radiuses that Fender currently offers.

ok arjay, those are the ones fender offers, but there are several more.
ok so it would seem to me that different radius boards excell at different things, which
does what better?

Your choices are:

7.25
9.5
10
12
and compounded radius 9.5-14

To me fret size and neck profile are more important, specially when it comes to my playing style, a lot of Blues and bends. I'm happy playing 7.25, 10 or 12, but if the profile and frets are not right for me I can't get comfortable with the neck. Oh and nut width is also important.

I believe both EJ and SRV Strats have 12" radius. Deluxe has the compounded radius.

This diagram provides a slightly exaggerated view of some of the more popular fretboard radii:

Image

As a general rule of thumb, the traditional 7.25" radius is considered best for chord work, while the flatter 12" radius is better suited to picking individual notes and bending the strings without fretting out. The 9.5" radius is Fender's compromise that purports to deliver the best of both worlds.

My Strat and my Classic Player Jazzmaster both have a 9.5" radius, while my '72 Tele Deluxe has a 12" radius. I have really come to prefer the Tele for the blues, but it's no great chore to move from one guitar to another. I've never played a guitar with a 7.25" radius, but I think it would feel strange to me.

I hope this helps! 8)

As far as neck radius goes, I prefer a good old 9 1/2" radius, and that's one thing that kept bringing me back to fenders. I believe that the basic theory is that a flatter neck radius (i.e. 12" +) makes string bending easier, while a rounder fretboard is more conducive to comfortably playing chords. Compound radius would be best suited to someone that plays both lead and rhythm, as the lower frets would be rounded and the upper frets would be flatter.
As far as what guitars have what profiles, You'll find that most fenders these days are 9 1/2" radius these days. Most Les Pauls and similar guitars have radiuses right around 12". Not sure where to point you if you wanted to feel a compound radius neck.

The new Am Deluxe has a 9.5 to 14" compound radius neck.

In fact, the point of a compound radius is that, because of the three-dimensional geometry of how strings relate to fingerboards, in theory the compound surface allows you to set the action very slightly lower without buzzing. You'd need very sensitive fingers to tell the difference - so naturally everyone claims they can!

Violins, cellos and such have had compound radius fingerboards for all of time. It's not even an issue of interest outside the guitar world.

Personally, I own various guitars with fingerboards ranging from 7.25 up to 16" (and my classical guitar has a flat fingerboard). My hands have absolutely no problem either shaping chords or bending strings on any and all of them. There's a lot of mythological nonsense talked on this issue.

...Though I have a feeling nobody's views are really wanted on this thread except Nikininja's. Why not edit the title to include his name and then he'll see the thread and give his opinion?

Cheers - C
