While I admit not a country rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd does southern like no other. We have all heard their radio hits a gazillion times ... but the thing to do is to check out all their non-radio material. Their songs are consistantly well written with fine-crafted guitar parts wall to wall. Just amazing ... and sooooo much more than Sweet Home Alabama and Free Bird.

Creedence Clearwater Revival isn't really country but some of their music is close. Great guitar work too.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I`m not sure if Roy Buchanan falls into that category but check him out. His Tele style is unique with a lot of bends and volume swells.

A lot of the country from the Texas (as opposed to nashville) scene is really southern-rocky. Check out bands like Cross Canadian Ragweed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkFtl50kqYE), Reckless Kelly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_s9BdP8C4M&feature=related), Micky and the Motorcars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuMNfxNqsRI), or Randy Rogers Band (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUPhiPaXKZU).

Even though they're more Americana I recommend Jackson Browne and Jackie Greene... and a modern country-rock band I like is Band Of Horses

Although he may not be country pop or rock, check out Ryan Bingham a rodeo dude who is a great songwriter and performer. More like a country folk style.

I must second the Molly Hatchet recommendation, their early work is intense. Some of the best southern rock out there. Give them a listen, you won't be disappointed. Find a copy of "Dreams I'll Never See", it's a cover of a Duane Allman tune, done to perfection. Well worth the effort.

How about some Trent Tomlinson? Pretty good country, with a rock edge to it. And I second the Cross Canadian Ragweed suggestion. Those guys are pretty good.

Blackberry actually. I agree though, my favorite song I've heard by them is "Sanctified Woman."

Also, Ragweed just broke up temporarily so they could spend time with their families after 15 years of 300ish shows per year. But the lead singer / badass guitarist is starting a new band called The Departed that should be exciting. Their first CD is due out I think sometime this year
