As you said, the machining process has to have + and - tolerances. The strings also will have + and - tolerances. I would think this alone would translate into variances concerning saddle adjustments. If not, ya got gremlins in them there guitars............. 8) Mike

I have a question for you. Lets see what answers come up.

If you take two identical guitars (Stratocaster models) and they are largely made by CNC machining so they are pretty close to identical every time, and you string them with identical strings, why are the saddle positions for intonation different for every guitar?

Being an engineer, I must ask. Do you know of a test that proves your theory? "intonation different for every guitar" I wonder if Fender already has data from their assembly plant about this?

Set up by human hands there will likely always be a difference. But, what if they are both Pleked?

The body is only a small part of the equation. From the cut of the nut to the tapping of the Trem Block. Minute difference's change the string length. heck even they way the ball end of the string seats in the ferrule will some difference. any one is probably negligible but added together

The fact any of this works at all is just witchcraft so it's best you just leave it at that.

Are they?

I question the opening premise.

It could be different string variances. It also could be subtle differences in wood densities. Or it could be just those pesky gremlins.

It has been my experience that no 2 guitars are exactly alike. All play, feel, and/or sound different. That is why most guitarists have several different guitars, even same models.

When you're dealing with wood, the expanding and shrinking at different rates of the woods used in each guitar could also come into play, creating small variances in the string length etc.

Given that your premise is laboratory 100% accurate and that we know that CNC machines are used to cut the wood, there is a manual final assembly, right?

manual work = more variances.

And so it begins.

:D

PS Though seriously, if there is really any difference at all in those saddle positions it will be due to difference in setup specs. Slightly different relief and different action, principly. Small changes to those lead to necessary adjustments of intonation. It's as boringly simple as that, I strongly suspect.

Can you shrink an animated .gif in the same way as a .jpg? If so, that would make a pretty cool avatar. Just thinkin' out loud...

the guitarists playing style or playing technique can be as influential in the end result, sound. It is those little adjustments that one makes to the guitar after following all of the proper procedures coupled with the afore mentioned style and technique that make for differences you are finding, or not, it's your decision.
