After years of not being able to listen to John's music because I found it too painful and emotional since his death,I've been listening to it all day.My darling daughters gave me the Signature set for Christmas(along with a cool Fender T-Shirt)and I've been playing it almost all day.I haven't played Double Fantasy yet and I never bought it as it was unbearably painful for me to listen to it or just about any of the songs on it.It comes on after the next album and then I'll find out for sure if I've progressed enough to be able to give it a listen.Am I the only who feels that way about a particular artist?

Although I have never heard of someone being unable to listen to a deceased artists music because it was too painful, I am happy you are able to listen to him again since you like him so much.

i've had a "song-page" vinyl record from an old Guitar Player mag of "Sharleena" by Frank Zappa. it's not the same as the one that was released on the LP, but he brings Dweezil out on stage and father and son do guitar solos together and it's absolutely powerful! i can't lesten to it without my eyes welling with tears.

other potent melodies (to name a few) that bring on the same emotion for me are:
eleanor rigby
while my guitar gently weeps
tommy - the whole thing... especially pinball wizard and where it's placed in the opera.
quadrophoenia - again the whole thing, and love rain o'er me and it's placement.
mona lisas and mad hatters

can't listen to them... while in public. people think i'm crazy... who knows

Wow, guitslinger! Thanks for posting this. I thought I was alone on that one. Although I can listen to John Lennon's songs, I just can't watch all the countless tv specials and movies that recount the last days of his life. I find it way too painful.

I remember hearing the news on the radio the night it happened. We had just finished playing a Xmas party for the local fire department and were hauling the equipment to the trucks. I was dumb founded. I guess there must still be some small part of me that's still in shock to this day. But, I guess it's time I just let it be. Celebrate his life rather than mourn his death.

Enjoy the music. That's what he made it for.

I love it but have to skip Yoko Ono's nonsense every time, making it the shortest album I have ever listened to, I guess.

Well I got through listening to Double Fantasy alright so I guess I can sit back and listen to all of John's gems again although some of his songs such as Yes It Is,In My Life,I'll Be Back,Womaand Happy Christmas still bring a lump in my throat. It's great to know that there are others who have the same feelings towards their favourite artists.

...I can't stand listening to Nevin play either.

But to answer your question, no, I have never had such a sense of loss that I couldn't listen to an artist's music.

However, some songs are very painful in the sense that I associate them with a particularly sad incident, the loss of a friend, etc.

"Cold December" by Counting Crows affects me that way because I lost a "little brother" (spiritual, not literal) who loved Counting Crows and he died while that song was popular.
