Good one, SBLS. Big Chet fan here. 8) I got as far as learning the scale on the trumpet with the beginning of a painful callouse and a split lip, so I went back to sore hands and fingers. I didn't want to mess up my purty face or smooching with my kisser.

I’m still po’d at how the mainstream music industry dealt with the man in black as he aged and the music changed. Thankfully, savvy punk rockers and rappers amongst other well known rockers injected new life into his latter day career. A Grammy came with it. So much for the big boy’s formula.

Johnny Cash;

Missing you Johnny. You went out in style:

Some great stuff you all posted. 8)

It's been a while since I've been on this thread, but I found this documentary film about Jessie Mae Hemphill. She was part of that North Mississippi hill country blues style, like R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, and "Mississippi" Fred McDowell. There's been a few films about that which I've posted before. It's probably my favorite style of blues, I think.

Jessie Mae and her documentary is a beautiful work of art. I’m always aware of and keen to appreciate observations and the care taken to make a truthful and in depth story of the kind that can only come from looking in from the outside. Americana and raw gut wrenching blues as it should be IMHO. You can dress up the blues, and produce the h**l out if it and, yes, there’s a welcome home for that; but, sometimes I just want it unspoiled, naked, and innocent.

One of my favourite styles too, Paul. Thanks, for the introduction to Jessie Mae Hemphill and the post. Times are changing fast, and so is the music and their presenters. I’m thankful that I grew up living in a time to share in the talent and stories from these great contributors to the Blues and music in general.

Sadly, all of those North Mississippi Hill Country blues musicians are gone now, including her. Although, they had enough kids that a lot of them carried the torch. At least there is the music left behind.

This is a great documentary, if you're a fan of Howlin' Wolf. 8) I have to admit, I like watching the stories about those blues artists as much as I do listening to their music. There's plenty of live performances in there to begin with, so you get both. I can't link it with the YouTube thing, because it's on the Archive.org site, but the link will take you to it, if you want to watch it. You can download it, like everything else on that site, as well.

Vintage Pirate Blues (the deep blue sea) and a really good tribute band (song starts at 1:51)

Lots of good stuff here.

Howlin’ Wolf - great, Paul.

Picked up a Healey cassette a few weeks ago. Yep! You heard it right. Cassette. Gave the same album as a CD to my nephew when it was released. Another talent missed.

That Alex Harvey tribute band does a decent job, SBLS. Some of these tribute bands have really tackled some difficult impressions. Ir’s not always as easy as some would think. In fact, I believe doing your own thing is the easy part.

Cool video Gary. The most talented are constantly pursued prodded and harangue'd by those who wish to control them and their talent. Elvis is one example, Marilyn is another. Their performances are the legacy they left for us.

Glad you liked it, Rollie. One of my favourite Presley tunes. Thanks!

I agree with you and, from what I’ve seen, I know your statement to be true. All too often those running the show are either incompetent or inconsiderate or just plain greedy leeches. The sincere ones have a tough go of it. Some get lucky and others get eaten alive or ignored. When times are good they put on an act, when times are bad . . . Take Elvis for example. Many criticize him for his early crap performances mostly on screen. That wasn’t the real King of Rock. That was the Colonel who never let Elvis out of sight. Col. Tom Parker refused Presley's travel outside of North America, Hawaii and Germany being exceptions, because the Colonel had his own travel and immigration restrictions. The poor kid from Tupelo, Mississippi was a kept servant which had a lot to do with the rest of his life. He could have even been bigger IMHO had he branched out, and discovered all the possibilities at his doorstep. It is said that he was happiest when he had brief control over some of his recordings without the Colonel.

Marilyn was a sad case, arguably about to regain the top of her career, as her addictions and misfortune did her in while she was taken advantage of, same with Elvis and Janis and . . . If they didn’t kill the money maker they, amongst false friends, killed the spirit. You can see that in their last smiles.

And that's the blues, brother.

I'm a decent guitarist who's been playing for about 10 years, mostly "jam band" style. I can "get by" in many different styles like blues, funk, and country but to me there is a big difference between playing a GREAT solo in a blues context, and playing a GREAT BLUES solo. In my beginning days I read many a book/article, blog and watched many a video about blues guitar, learned 12 bar blues, other structures, pentatonics, blue notes, call and response, shuffles, all the stuff everyone knows makes blues blues. But I want to take my blues to the next level, I want my melodies to participate in the language and long history of this style. I can play really "bluesy" licks but they don't feel truly authentic. What I'm looking for is a resource, a book or video series or something, that will introduce me to some of these licks that have been passed down and altered through the years. I know the most legit way of doing this is by learning actual blues songs by ear but I don't feel like I'm yet immersed enough into the tradition to really know what songs are the most useful to learn. All help is super appreciated

Welcome to the Forum Gagel! Jimi is the one to follow. He set the example. You must live in the woodshed for a few years and work on your craft. Bring Jimi's first four albums with you and when you come out you will play everything. live there is no comparison and I've seen most of them and the only one to come close to his psychedelic-ness is Henry Vestine Jimi liked him and Terry Kath both Tele-players.
