Really great stuff all around gang. Awesome harp, geetars, and vocals, Thanks, for those Blues posts.

Aw, you just wanna play with Samantha, Rollie. Get your resume in. Ya never know.

When you live in a cold country like Canada you get a little crazy and sing the blues to warm up like our brothers and sisters in the south. Here’s how Steve Hill does it:

Thanks, SBLS. I think Lawrence Welk missed out by not hiring Jimi. :P

Shoeee, Marky. As they say in the Maritimes, Joanne Shaw Taylor was “right some good”. Man oh man can this Brit play and sing. Her songwriting has won awards too. Her resume is as good as her playing, and this year Sony picked her up. I think now she'll get even more attention that she deserves. I’ll catch her if she ever comes to the hood. I’ve always said the girls can give the guys a run for the money, and this one certainly can and should IMHO. She’s the whole package. Thanks, for pointing Joanne in my direction. :D

My pleasure, FSB. Joanne is the real deal, for sure. That video was the first time I saw her too and I was so impressed by her that I had to post it. Thanks for her career update info and for Blodwyn Pig - Modern Alchemist. I have enough trouble playing one instrument at a time let alone two.

Thanks to you too, Rollie for Lynyrd Skynyrd - I Got the Same Old Blues (live '75). I liked it very much.

Stormy Monday is one of my very favorite blues songs and I like the way The Allman Brothers play it the best.
Thanks, Rollie!

It's been a long time since I've posted (or even listen to, come think of it) any blues for the thread, so in my search for something, I found this:

A remastered edition of a 1966 CBS TV Festival series featuring - Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Sunnyland Slim, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee and more . . .

Colin James The Blues Masters. Hadn’t known of this before now, but glad you posted it, Paul. I got into the business shortly after this legends’ telecast, and in those days things were much different, especially with B&W TV. Costs were minimal, production was affordable and everywhere contributing locally and to networks, and a variety of artistic intimacy with the performers was conveyed to the audience, many of whom were newly introduced to these seasoned performers eager to show their stuff before money became the motivator either because of the artists or because of the big money men.

Spontaneity and wide promotion at the local level gave us some duds for sure; however, there were many classic performances, not all big time shows, and a lot of those have proven unequaled by many. Today these things, for the most part are centralized, polished, formulated, or terrible, and most often they are taken for granted. IMHO. Exceptions exist always, but, I needn’t tell you that present reviews and promotion often fall short. That said, network TV was different too. Our local station contributed to 11 network shows a week. They do none today AFAIK. The networks turned much of their own programming over to production houses where, for good reason, storyboards and shot sheets have less flex at times. No matter. A great show is a great show as evidenced here with these legends.

The good sessions today and from yesteryear are presented in a different way, just like the inner soul black and white photos taken by Yousef Karsh (especially the originals which I luckily stumbled upon in Montana), versus the coloured periodical photos from Annie Leibovitz. Both great, but different styles. Cinema is filled with similar differences and style in B&W and in colour, and regions play a large part with their contributions. It’s what gives artists a chance to shine as seen here, and shine they did. As for Howilin’ Wolf - Big and Bad. 8)
Thanks, for the vids, Paul.

Yeah, they really don't make TV like that anymore, unless you have something like public broadcasting, or here it would be PBS. Is there a Canadian equivalent to that?

Here in Canada we have no PBS similarity. Instead we have government run broadcasting similar to the BBC. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation aka CBC has a history of a well founded reputation with promoting Canadian talent like the Guess Who, Neil Young, today’s talent, and the other arts.

Commonwealth countries are found to be protective of getting eaten alive by Hollywood, New York, and your other big money giants of the entertainment industry. That gap is narrowing, however. Certainly, Britain, Australia, and Canada have seen fruit from this growth. The public doesn’t always agree, and we often feel compromised or restricted even as professionals.

Canada has many great music related programs and interviews in the archives mostly from yesteryear with everyone from visiting Jazz and Blues greats to Hendrix, and the British Invasion. John and Yoko comes to mind. Less so with country music, however, except for past maritime influence. The CBC was known for their niche high quality record production, and with it a lot of classical recordings even today are aired on radio, where we have a national CBC 1 and CBC 2 network, and along with that some dynomite interviews and programs with and hosted by celebrities.

CBC was known as the Hockey Night In Canada network, and it was the premium sports network until private television took over evolving into TSN. CBC still covers the Olympics and some limited random sports.

It still does original drama and comedy, and many of the talent in front of the camera and behind is exported to your networks. SNL’s Lorne Michaels is one.

Briefly, CBC does showcase Canadian variety programming, but less in house production is made than in the past. CBC’s variety is unlike PBS in that subject matter is not as extensive. No sewing, Mennonite cooking, boat building, or Doo Wop shows.

CBC has a second network for TV as well, and that is where documentaries, editorials, news, and such are 24/7. Similar to PBS on one hand and CNN on the other they have similar political views, but CBC is a little more relaxed being that CBC is taxpayer owned, and yet the network is changing with the times and society. I guess we could call it the Liberal media and competition. With today’s happenings, CBC is beginning to look like CNN’s partner in chime. It wasn’t always that evident, and yet it may have been subliminal like the National Film Board with a similar history and purpose. The CBC because of it’s uniqueness is many things, including being a television inventor and innovator, and it is highly regarded here and elsewhere amongst peers. CBC is considered a tax grab by others, and there is a sense of clique and stuffiness that doesn’t always fit or tries to set the status quo. Recently, an order was sent to mandate the CBC’s future with the Internet optimized ahead of TV, and social media has become a big part of it. There is a following that would like to see the CBC gone, like most government run business, the profits are not always at the top of the agenda. A double edged sword with good and bad, I suppose, in that this means here ratings do not always drive the programming, which can sometimes be the case with PBS as well as the CBC. Private television has a different view.

Back to PBS. Canada is one of the largest and most complete cable countries. With few players and monopolies it has been, in comparison, somewhat complete for some time. Whereas USA is heavily populated north and south, Canada is mostly east to west along the southern border. The sparsely populated north still has some cable/internet need; but. recent legislation is about to fix that. So, your PBS is not only watched here, but we contribute with donations to shared American PBS stations. Politics bundled with PBS, subtle or direct, and how it relates on both sides of the border comes with the territory. The PBS entertainment value is without question IMHO.
You are sure to find some great music clips from CBC on YouTube being that they were an early network in this country. It wasn’t until 1961 (‘67 for me) that the second network CTV started, and the third network began as Global (small in region) ‘74, but a later purchase became a full national and partially international network in ‘90 (‘75 for me with the new owner). I mention this because many great programs have been kept and archived
by the older CBC, but changed hands with the other networks did not, sadly, take it amongst themselves to keep film and tape so much. Both networks are now heavily News orientated. I sometimes think they still find entertainment costly and competitive which it is. Digital recordings and storage would have been very beneficial back in the days.

I’m betting CBS, NBC, and to some extent ABC and PBS have a leg up with historical performances and documentaries as does CBC. I know that once in a while these tapes and films are in individuals’ storage and local stations. Some are gems, some are hidden, and some are lost. I have a few tapes of mine, probably junk, maybe not, but that’s where they'll go, and most that I’d like to have are lost and forgotten; but, obsolete formatting, cost. and storage is prohibitive. Many lost and forgotten Guess Who audio and video recordings, many unreleased, have just been found in a garage last week and are being recovered at a museum as we speak. Volunteers have brought playback gear to the rescue.

PBS is a treasure and a fine example to follow says me. YMMV

Hope that expanded blurb explains it, Paul. :P
