Paul, thank you.

I spent the morning watching Rural Blues. Loved it. No fluff or inappropriate condescending interviews. Just raw to the bone representation of each individuals’ soulful contribution to the Blues and from the Blues. Nice! Kudos to all those involved.

It showed so many things such as the different styles and interpretations which proves to the uninitiated that the Blues is not just a one trick pony, nor do you need the best guitar for the vibe. I even heard Scottie and Presley at one point.

While the Blues can be copied, experiencing life and discovering misery definitely has it’s influence on the performance. Musicianship is a wonderful thing, but it need not be perfect nor fancy. You don’t need the best voice. You do need to have your own vibe, and be able to convey it.

I was thinking what these artists would have thought to have others take their originals, and to promote them with and without compensation. My guess is some would be grateful while others would not, preferring to keep the (songs) close. It is who they are after all (as one of the men alluded to) and for some that is the one thing they can take ownership of.

I get that you felt sorrow for the individuals in the documentary, Paul. Life. unfortunately, and sometimes questionably, is harsh, and it’s easy to see that in this video.

I’ll use the Irish proverb I’ve used here before: “A man of character is richer than a man of means”, and that is certainly true here.

A quick request to the youth of the world. The Blues came to the New World by way of the Old World. It is a gift given to us from those who shared it. Cherish it, keep it alive, and share it for other generations to enjoy. It deserves that love, and it will pay you back many times. Thanks!

The thing I liked about it was the total rawness of the whole thing. They just were invited in to their homes and played and talked about what who they are and all of that. I'm actually familiar with just about everyone in this film, since I've seen most of them in other films, and know their music. I think if I were to pick an area for my favorite blues, it would be this. I know Chicago is usually the top choice for blues, and there's others, but this would be my top choice, I think. The thing that made it kind of sad to me, besides the fact they obviously lived hard lives, which in turn created the music they did, is the fact there's maybe two of the people in this film still alive, and who knows if they still are at this point in time. Well, they did live pretty hard lives and didn't exactly take care of themselves by doing yoga and Pilates. :P Besides, most of them were born around the 1920's era, and that's almost 100 years now. It's really amazing a lot of them even lasted as long as they did, but they were a tough bunch, and it shows in the music.

I came across this today, from a Facebook post. I thought he sounded really good, and would like to listen to more of him when I get a chance.

FYI
Some time back, I heard that there was a backroads tour in a Cadillac that would take you, if you were up to it, to the juke joints and Delta blues locations that were not on the regular beaten path. Certainly not on the interstate.

In short, it was a historical trip where the driver had connections with some of the locals, historical and non historical barrel houses and, perhaps, contributors to the Blues much like in that documentary. It was highly recommended by many who liked an adventure. If I recall correctly, I read it in a music magazine; but, a search may find it or a similar service. Probably not for everyone, but definitely for diehards. 8)

That is something I would do, if I were younger. Very cool and great music, I'd bet. 8)

You're welcome. Sometimes when you watch another thing on YouTube, they'll put a few other random things in the side queue, so I just clicked on it to see what is was. I'm also following and signed up to a few blues based record labels that show stuff. Alligator Records, Alive Naturalsound, Fat Possum, etc.

Signing up or following record labels is a great way to find not only consistent good selections, but also great quality. Today that quality varies where some poor recordings are made better, and better ones are made worse. Also, many labels have been goobled up, and, perhaps, they now have different names. Others have been lost. The CDs may have included the original labels as they are or not. Obviously, the choice of music varies from small to large. So YMMV Did you know that vinyl has been made from CDs. That can be a good or bad thing. Many early CDs are inferior. Some recordings are intentionally recorded with a miked gramaphone.

I remember when I started collecting, I got a few books with labels of 78RPMs, LPs, and 45RPMs (labels are collectable) that detailed the record companies’ listings.

Some (but definitely not all notables):

For those first HiFi stereo recordings a lot was competitive and often experimental with companies like Command, Phase4, and such. Classical with examples such as Deutsche Grammophon and Angel; especially Bluebird and Verve for Jazz and Blues; JVC, Sony, RCA , Columbia, Ovation, Project 3 for Quad; A&M was considered high quality at moderate prices upon it’s introduction.

Chesky awesome quality throughout the genres, and some binaural.

Bluesway, and Delmark (the oldest independent American Jazz and Blues label), Harlem’s label Black Swan (owned, operated, and marketed to African Americans since 1921).

Alligator Records, and Fat Possum like you picked are fine examples too, Paul. I have some Alligator recordings, I’ve heard of Fat Possum, but Alive Naturalsound is one that is new to me.

Some of the best recordings and selections are unexpected and are a treat. I do know that there was a huge market of fraudulent CDs coming out of Holland in the 90s and they are probably out there today. For that period, without assurance, I would often look for the same CD from a different source. I’m sure I short changed myself at times.

Find this. It might be worth $50,000 and you can buy a lot of Blues CDs with that:

Speaking of 78 RPM, I found this site. http://www.78rpmrecord.com/ I like a lot of the Okeh Records recordings. There's also archived audio on the Wayback Machine site. http://www.wayback.com/

Holey Smoley! That’s quite a group of listings, Paul. Thanks, a lot. That’ll make a great read.

Some may find these 78 records boring and old fashioned. I look at it differently, Recorded music has been around for over a hundred years and early recordings didn't have the distribution they do today which adds to the rarity and mystique knowing that so much will never be recorded or left behind with format changes. Labels and history are cool as is that from another country. The sleeves with dated ads are a hoot as well. Definitely a lot of crap too. When the content can override the quality that says a lot for the record, 45s included. After weeding out my 78s to keeping the ones that were unique or good, I sold off 500 decent ones for a song. Moving was a PITA. Hahaha! Digital music has changed the value of some records, but others have held or increased in value. I don’t concern myself too much on that though unless I strike a gold mine. Buddy Holly was framed and hung on the wall. I hope to do more.

There’s great Opera, Classical, Country, Blues for sure, Jazz, and Rock and Roll to be found in it’s originality with 78s. 78s even had early boxed sets with full stage performances. Blues players, and rock bands and others for ages have taken their motivation from many of those old discs. I inherited a box that I’ve yet to go through. So your post will be helpful, Paul. Thanks! :D

Nice that we can now clean up the noise and clicks and pops on the records with a little work and software. Saves me from buying a warehouse.

You're welcome. You can find a lot of blues stuff in there, I'm sure. I haven't gone digging too much, but I did find an early, if not an original recording of "House Of The Rising Sun," which you know, of course was done by The Animals.

That’s a fine example of what’s out there, Paul. Very cool indeed. You should hear my long played version. It doesn’t sound anything like those gems.

Since yesterday was John Lee Hooker's birthday, I figured I'd post this, which is apparently his first film he was in, according to the info.

Some more John Lee Hooker. This time, live from down the road from where I live, but back in 1991. I wasn't here back then.
