Well, I suppose you could head across the border and watch it here. I wonder if that would work, actually? Kind of ironic, since I could be in Canada in six hours by car, more or less, depending on traffic, without having to go over any vast oceans or anything like that, like you would for Europe, just to name one continent. I even think back in the day, you didn't even need a passport to cross borders, didn't you?

That’s an interesting concept. I don’t know if that would work or if the SIM card affects it or the phone depending on whether it’s purchased in the States or Canada. My thinking is it is unlikely the phone. I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t work walking around the Peace Gardens. More likely your service provider. Good point, Paul.

You are right that passports were not needed for crossing the border. Just identification. I used a hard copy of my birth certificate combined with a photo ID such as a driver’s licence. As long as you had a valid birth certificate and some other government ID it usually was accepted. My military identification saved a lot of hassle too. Passports could have been used, but they were not necessary before 2009 for the Canada/US border.

Today it’s definitely passports, Certain other certification may or may not be used, however that changes, and air travel is pretty restrictive. Enhanced driver’s licence, enhanced ID, Green card, NEXUS, Permanent Resident card and, perhaps, more or less.

I know that enhanced cards are iffy and have been included and excluded depending on technology and acceptance, so best to check all that before a trip, For now it’s safe to have a passport and another ID like a birth certificate.

In the future North Americans won’t need any of this. They’ll know everything about us, and we’ll all be watching the same media.

Meanwhile, for your enjoyment, back to the Blues on this side of the border:

What's really interesting about the whole border thing is I do believe there is a house or building (probably many more than that,) that one part was technically in the US, and the other in Canada. Some town or other split with the border. I could imagine what a pain in the arse that must be to get around that. I suppose it didn't matter even 20 years ago. After 9/11 everything changed.

You are right, Paul. 9/11 truly changed things. My wife’s grandparents had a farm by the border with relatives on both sides. Her grandma use to have butter for the border guards and travel was a lot more relaxed.

On the west coast we used to take day trips by boat and weekend trips by ship from our inner harbour to Port Angeles and Seattle, Washington respectively. The same happened with Americans to our city in Victoria. It was like having no border as we had minimal hassle. I think a lot has to do with the experience and quality of the authorities, but then again population and risks have increased making it difficult for everyone.

One time, crossing from Windsor to Detroit via the Ambassador bridge, I saw how difficult it could be when I was a kid and my family was moving to the east coast. We had everything removed from Dad’s car, camping gear and all laid out out and gone through on the parking lot. There was no apparent reason for it, and when the agents refused to help to put it back so we could continue our long journey, the refusal had my generally easy going dad blow his stack.

Years later, I and a friend got held back and interrogated until we convinced the American Border Patrol that we didn’t know how night brought us to a backroad that took us into Washington from BC. They didn’t have the road on their secret map. They do now.
I’ve experienced times when crazy trade disagreements such as with lumber or fish creates ill and ugly feelings too. I found that out the hard way by walking past a fish monger in Seattle. Ya just never know what conditions at the border will be, and the average citizen gets the crap from no fault of their own. Funny since neighbourly handshakes across the border still exist and the majority wouldn't have it any other way. :?
Chuck has his own border blues:

FSB and Paul - I've read your interesting conversation and I'm surprised by how tight things have become. The last time I drove through Canada was in 1979. I drove from Chicago to North Tonawanda, NY taking the route north of the Great Lakes on the main highways. It was as if there was no border. I notice the speed limit signs changed from MpH to KpH and went on my CB radio to find out what 100 KpH converted to in MpH because that's all my speedometer read in. A helpful trucker told me to keep it at a little over 60 and I'd be fine. It was similar going back into the USA. I think I showed my Driver's License but that was it. There were no delays. It's sad to me how things have changed.

Nice videos, FSB. Thanks!

The videos - You’re welcome, Marky. You are right that Canada and USA are very much the same, and still very much different. As for the Imperial and Metric measurements, lots of arguments for and against. Nowadays, USA and very few countries (almost none) use gallons, and those that do often use gallons for gas, but not for anything else. When digital gauges were added many were a help for travelling in both countries. :D
The funny thing is a 2x4 is still a 2x4 per se as is a 4x8. Home Depot makes sure of that.
No matter how we look at it, industry dictates what the people get or don’t get and it’s a tug of war.

As for the Blues we all love the same. :D
Cheers!

Yeah, 50.8000mm x 101.600mm doesn't have the same ring to it as 2" x 4" does. :P

Someone just used a metric converter site. :P

Seriously, I think they tried to convert to metrics here in the 70's, but it failed to happen, I guess. It's all in multiples of 10, so I suppose that's not the most difficult thing to grasp. I guess if you're used to using something for so long, that makes it a lot more difficult to do. It's kind of like learning a different language.

Yup! I do pretty good, but I’m still working on it. Pizza still goes in the oven at 425° or thereabouts, but meat is in kg. Whoo boy! It’s especially fun when recipes call for one method and the ingredients call for another that don’t even come close so that you may have to convert twice. :? Of course having a few sets of measuring cups and spoons in both metric and Imperial are handy.

Wherever the case, a six pack is still a six pack.

One of my favorites. It's my go-to song to play when I'm feeling blue.

Oh yeah, I forgot, there's also the whole Fahrenheit and Celsius thing, as well. At least that's easier to convert, with 32 degrees = to 0, or whatever. :P

That was a great concert. It's been a long time since I've watched it, though.

Getting back to the blues, I happened to find this on YouTube:

It has Muddy Waters, Big Mama Thornton, Big Joe Turner, and George "Harmonica" Smith. "Pinetop" Perkins is also on piano, in Muddy Waters' band.
