Just before and just after 1920, women blues singers were some of the highest paid entertainers in the business. Here's one of them.

Ethel Waters. What a great lady with a humour, and a great talent (not only a blues vocalist, but one nevertheless).

In the mid 60s I was shooting a 1/2 hour video interview with her when she interrupted the conversation, told us how happy she was to be in our company, and then proceeded to excitedly ask us if she could spontaneously break into a song. Imagine that! We weren't expecting it as she seldom performed at the time, and we were not specifically miked for it out of respect; but, after the hugs she gave each one of us, it was certainly a highlight of my career. For those who are not familiar with this lady. Check out her bio on the net.

Thank you, Ethel Waters. 1896 - 1977. RIP

Lots of great responses here... Thanks ! :D

But I'm much more concerned about the future of the Blues than it's past.

Two young players who're likely to help keep it alive are Johnny Lang, and a relative newcomer - Samantha Fish !

Enjoy !

cheers!

Something old, something not so old, and something new. Enjoy.

It's plain to see the Blues is alive and well.

Something like Rollin' and Tumblin'.
I particularly like it when the drummer gets involved, about 2 minutes in.
I mean, really involved.

It got me thinking I might try winding a single, double or triple-pole pickup and building an electric CBG some day.

Our local blues society (Omaha) brings Samantha Fish to town fairly regularly. I've never caught her. After watching these I am definitely going to have to! She looks like an awesome performer!
