I'm a harp player (harmonica, not angelic) as well as a guitarist and we harpists have a similar benchmark in Little Walter. It's generally accepted amongst all harmonica players that time is divided as "BLW" and "ALW" (Before Little Walter and After Little Walter). There are other harpists to come along who have been more technical or more versatile (Kim Wilson, Lee Oskar, and John Popper to name a few), but Little Walter was the guy who developed/pioneered the honking, growling, heavily overdriven, amplified harmonica tone that is now the standard everybody shoots for.

Since I was born in 1970, I couldn't comprehend how much Jimi changed music, at least not on a first-hand basis.

However, my drummer/best friend was 16 when "Are You Experienced" came out; he was already playing in a band with guys around his own age. His guitarist bought the record and the entire band sat in the garage and listened to it all the way through, mostly without talking.

At the end of the record, one of the guys said, "Well what are we going to do now? The whole world has changed!"

Whether you like him or not, he changed what we do forever...and I love what he did!

Exactly, he didn't put out a few records that sold. He steer'd the path of music and music performance in a different direction. Ok you can site Townsend as preceeding him performance wise. And Les Paul for layered recording of guitars. But no one did it like JH, all as one package deal.
Much like how the Beatles introduced pop music to the world en mass. They cracked Communist Russia when the best military intellegence organizations were failing.

For recordings, I think he peaked with Axis. Ladyland doesn't do it for me. A handfull of good songs interspersed between nonsense. AYE is great but I think he's hindered by Chandler/Jefferies demanding new audience friendly songs. And the recording costs/techniques of the time undoubtedly held him back a bit.
Listening to some of what's been released posthumously. I'm glad he went when he did. Went out on a high rather than boring us into him being dismissed as a crooner in the autumn of his life.
Gig performance, Monterey without a doubt.
Gig musicality, Winterland. Get that album, forget the band of gypsies album.
Aside from Star Spangled Banner, Woodstock don't do it for me either.

I wouldn't say Jimi Hendrix is the best guitarist ever as there are so many gifted musicians today that could out play him.
However the music he created was influential and the man himself is an icon not just as a guitarist but as a musician whether people like it or not.
I love his music and have for a long time, but recently with the current state of music as well as listening to older bands and artists that I love like the stones, I've been exploring older music more and more and been enjoying Jimi again more than I ever have.
May his memory continue to carry on B-)

I never got to see him, as I was 13 at the time, my parents thought my going to Woodstock was not a good Idea   I begged to differ, but to no avail  Just to think of all the cute older women there, I would have been in Heaven!! :D :D

I heard the other day on NPR of all places, a report on the new Hendrix compilation with recordings of the Isley Brother's and earlier gems. Thumbs Up....

I'd have to say Monterey. I did see him in April 1968 in White Plains NY and loved the show (what I remember of it (nudge, nudge, wink, wink).

Been going through a Jimi documentary that is on Netflix right now. It's pretty interesting, and has some good footage of rarely seen performances. Anyone with Netflix on your Wii, PS3, XBOX, check it out for sure.

Riley for the first time listener, I recommend Are You Experienced. Though I prefer Axis, it's not as hard edged sounding. AYE is quite raw in places. You'll get lost or bored with Electric Ladyland as a new listener, though it does have a few wonderfull tracks on it.

I thought it was cool that he covered Sgt. Peppers 3 days after the Beatles released the album. They rehearsed it one time backstage then played the tune. George and Paul were in the audience that night.

Agreed. If you are only going to pick up one Jimi album, Are You Experienced is a requirement
Funny enough though, the Jimi disc I play the most happens to be a random 20track greatest hits compilation that I picked up at Best Buy.
Either way you go, if it's Hendrix you can't go wrong.
