It is just MY opinion, just as it is YOUR opinion that he is the greatest. There's no need to go into a long discussion for or against because in the end we will still disagree. Yes, Jimi was great, but in my opinion most of what he did was already being done by Buddy Guy so far as playing style, riffing, stage antics, etc. I think Hendrix took what Buddy did and added more distortion, a little afro, some crazy clothes and an upside down guitar to it. I can't help but look at these videos and think that Hendrix took a lot of notes from them and put his own spin on it. Of course, musicians do borrow all the time from each other.

Of course this is just MY opinion. No need to get into a back and forth about it and no offense is intended. As I said, I am a fan of his playing and music, but just can't agree that he is the "best ever". I would say Buddy Guy is "better" than Hendrix was, among others. True though, the whole "greatest ever" debate is always based on opinion or very subjective.

Regards.

Jimi transended everything that we thought was the epitome of musicianship and showmanship and upped it to the Nth degree.Sure things that he did on stage and a lot of his licks had been played before but Jimi honed and refined all of these things and made them his own.I know that people will say that he was stuck in the Major pentatonic scale for most of his leads but it's what he did in this range of notes that makes him shine. He exploded on the music scene mostly because guys like Clapton,Beck,Page,Townshend et al stood in awe of him and gave him glowing endorsements. With accolades coming from such an esteemed players his destiny to rock stardom was pretty well assured.
To me his most memorable performances were a 3-way tie being :Woodstock -where his incendary version of the Star Spangled Banner was hailed as one of the most soulful and beautiful performances of it ever. Monterey-Where he was put into the world spotlight and astounded critics and listeners alike with his dazzling theatrics and playing. Live at the Fillmore East New Year's Eve '69-Jimi's playing here was just simply superb. After doing his first show promoter Bill Graham gave Jimi a hard time and said that he should cut down on the theatrics and concentrate on his playing.Jimi took his advice to heart and what followed was maybe the most revered concert playing of all time. Machine Gun alone has taken it's place as maybe the most graphic and heartfelt protests of the Vietnam War ever and as one of the best guitar performances in history.I can't listen to it to this day without getteng choked up and with goosebumps. When Jimi cuts loose with his main lead break you can picture jets screaming in over the Mai Kong Delta and the smoke-filled winds blowing over the napalm devastated forests.Eric Clapton once said:"Jimi Hendrix was a gift who stayed with us a while and then went back with the other gods."Nuff Said.

If you scroll further down the page from that there's a great cut from the Rainbow Bridge movie on Maui called Hey Baby that's about 5 1/2 minutes long. The pic is of him with a black outfit and a white Strat and it actually shows him playing the song.I have the Rainbow Bridge Movie and the original album. In the movie Jimi only appears for about 20 minutes but that 20 minutes is phenominal.

Although I am not nearly old enough to have ever seen Jimi live, I have seen countless videos of his performances, and there was a time when I was a little younger that ALL I wanted to listen to was Jimi Hendrix. I think to describe Jimi's music, and especially his live performances goes far and beyond just what he was playing on the guitar, but the show itself I think was just about as important as the music. I think the stage antics were what really caught people's attention, and then it's like, wow, this guy's also an amazing guitar player. It's hard to crown one person the greatest guitarist ever, but it would be no stretch to say that Jimi is very high on the list of the most influential guitarists ever.

Love, love, love Jimi. He was one of my first, biggest inspirations, and his music (to me) is still every bit as exciting as when I discovered it 30 years ago. There have been long spells where I didn't listen to him much, and when I return he is as spellbinding as ever.

Sure, as many have pointed out, he took from a lot of different sources, but every musician does that. The magic is in how they put all the different things together.

Best performance? Monterey was certainly amazing and really put him on the map. Woodstock probably cemented his reputation. And the Fillmore/Band of Gypsies show(s) showed the breadth and maturity of his sound. Sort of comparing apples and oranges. They all hold a special place. If I had to choose, I'd pick Woodstock.

I have listened to R&R pretty much from the beginning. Things kind of transitioned along. We almost never saw an act back then. Never heard of T-bone Walker or Buddy Guy or any blues acts hardly. But when I was sitting in the DDI and heard Hendrix from another car in 67 or 68, it was a "what the hell?" moment. It was different and it was damn good. I asked my buddy, "Who in the hell is that?" He said Hendrix. To me it was as different as night and day from what I had been hearing on the radio. Are You Experienced? got some of my scarce cash. (Not much money around then.) He was a ground breaker without ever seeing him. So however he is regarded now, he was very special then.
