Monterey, no doubt. That was the performance that made Hendrix famous

I'd say Woodstock, and mostly becuase of the Star Spangled Banner. But, it was Monterey that made him known. And if I do say so myself, the tone he had at Monterey was one of the best I've ever heard.

Jimi will always be one of my favorites.

There is a new CD compilation of Hendrix's earlier work in sessions with the Isley Brothers which are the ones who launched him.
Much of his earlier work is clean, but the beauty is that you can hear his legato phrasing. His playing then was very much in the if I may Albert Lee camp, ( to point out a style).

For me that was the hint at what was to come, but to this day I truly believe that Hendrix never achieved his potential because of the drugs, sadly like so many others then and now we'll never know and can only speculate.

I agree that Monterey was the first big moment in his career and that was really a major turning point in rock history. As far as most legendary though I'd pick Woodstock, in the couple of years between monterey and woodstock Jimi really came into his own as a musician and although he was still playing the same basic stytle, I think he took it a little closer to the edge later in his career and that's the Jimi that really influenced me personally.

His most legendary performance?...in my mind it would have to be the one Eric Clapton spoke about in an interview, when he first met the members of Cream, and Clapton said he walked into the dressing room, over to the mirror and while picking out his fro, casually asked them if he could jam with them.
Then on stage he ripped into "Killing Floor",and Clapton said it was a song he had always wanted to do but felt he didn't have the chops,he then said,"from then on I just stood back and watched him".
That was a classic performance....he smoked 'em.

To me, he was a rock star and he nailed the rock star formula. Live fast and die at the height of your career. That really was the key to his success. How would things have turned out if he were still alive? He would be 70 and straining to play with the speed and finesses that he did when he was young. We would be complaining.

Edit: His performance at Woodstock will always be what the majority of people on earth think of when they hear "Hendrix"

+1 on dying at the height of his carreer. like cobain and many other musician's. one of the reasons we know them is cause they died at the height of there carreer.

and yeah your right, whenever i hear, hendrix, the image of him standing on stage at woodstock doing that improvisation always comes into mind.

The first guitarist that I ever saw in concert that made me think that
there are no limits to what or where you can go with music.

I'm a fan!

There are three guitar players for me I appreciate most; there are countless of good guitarists. They are SRV, JJ Cale and Hendrix; oh sorry Nevin... :D
Perhaps I have´t heard the ultimate guitarist; anyway I don´t collect more experiences. I am listening so little new music nowadays... I am so old, stuck with my habits; yes you are little old when you are 47 and need soon special glasses to read anything.

So; Hendrix moves me a lot.

While I can't agree that hendrix is the greatest guitarist ever, I am a fan and enjoy his music and playing.

+1 for Monterey
