most deffenety, Nirvana expanded it, but did NOT start it. I know Mudhoney flowed it and the Sex Pistols kindov arranged it, but nobody can state who started it. I'ts kind of like asking who started clalssic rock. It just evolved over time.

how the hell did you work the sex pistols into grunge....... they were A) several years before it and B) more like glam punk, and were fast and not to much distortion

Grunge seemed like a made up name. The bands that were popular in the 89-96 era from the pacific northwest sounded different than other bands but kind of similar to each other. Of those bands Alice In Chains led the pack, IMHO YMMV.
I always saw AiC as a band caught up in the whole Grunge thing, they were misunderstood metal

I agree with you there although if forced to take a genre I would say more hard rock. Great band with amazingly harmonized vocals.

I agree with you Bros, AIC=metal+rock and the label 'grunge' diminishes that influence on music in the early 90s. When I listen to rock music from that era, all included Offspring, Soul Asylum, Collective Soul, Third Eye Blind, Weezer, Sublime, Veruca Salt, White Zombie, No Doubt, Goo Goo Dolls, too many great bands with great songs as you listen like you would have back then the subtle differences that the rock journalists tried so hard to emphasize make the grunge label sillier if that is possible. There was just a whole bunch of talented people creating music at that time and if I remember right it was all good. I just wish I could remember more bands from the 90-95 era.

I was there...Stationed at fort Lewis from '86 to '93 and my girlfreind at the time worked in Radio in Seattle....

The heavy hitters in the Seattle scene at the time were all Green River spin-offs - Mother Love Bone and Mudhoney (and later, Pearl Jam), and Soundgarden and Alice...the guys from Nirvana were definitely NOT a part of the Seattle scene.

Mark Arm from Mudhoney came up with the "grunge" term, I think.

All that aside...the correct answer is, of course, BLACK SABBATH.

soundgarden, pearl jam and aic aren't grunge, they just got lumped in the category as they were from Seattle. Stone temple pilots got lumped in as they were just a rock band that came out in when grunge was popular. Soundgarden, pearl jam and aic are heavy rock bands as the bands themselves have said. STP are a rock band.
Mudhoney and Nirvana were grunge and sound nothing like the previous mentioned bands.
Its like saying because the Beatles were the first proper pop band to go globally famous, everything from England is pop. Unfortunately that's not the case.

Food for thought.

That's my point...contrary to popular belief, "Grunge" does not mean "Seattle Sound".

The soundtrack of my time in the Pacific NW (before it became a dot-com refugee camp full of annoying hipsters) will always be Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden and Alice (and a lot of house and techno because of my girl...another story). It was rain and fog-soaked hard rock/metal, not neo-punk.

I never even heard of Nirvana until '91 or so, and only then after spending some time with some folks in Olympia.

nirvana acknowledged this themselves.... theres an interview where the interviewer asks about AiC, Soundgarden, etc. and kurt says smoething like nirvanas plays with mudhoney, tad, etc and that they are in fact 2 different scenes.... again, i dont remember his exact words but its something to that effect

"the legendary Kim Salmon, who formed the Scientists, an influence on bands such as Mudhoney and The Jesus Lizard. Kim Salmon claims to have been the first person to use the term grunge to describe music. "

Australian musician Kim Salmon first described his music as 'grunge' in the early 80's, in exasperation at the need to label and define sub-sub-genres. His band The Scientists were named as an influence by many of those Seattle bands, including Mudhoney and Nirvana. He later went on to form perhaps the dirtiest cowyboy-swamp band ever, The Beasts Of Bourbon.

Now I'm not saying he invented Grunge, but he did make music that was one of the elements feeding into that Seattle sound.
Once you've heard the man with a Telecaster and a Rat pedal there's no turning back!

Grunge is just a mainstream name for punk rock /alternative music IMO.

Husker Du had a big influence on many bands that came out in the era 1986-1994 for sure .
