Personally, I preferred Neil Young in his Buffalo Springfield and CSN&Y days.

(at least back then his guitar was in tune)

Voted for Neil Young like nearly everyone else but I am one of those that don't care. I've never liked the 'genre' or even the fact most of these bands don't sound anything like each other enough to be classed as a genre.

For me rock is rock. Crap is crap and great is great. I don't really believe in pigeonholing any band in a genre. I would certainly hate that to happen to my own band.

Some have real chops lyrically and musically and are more like 'real' rock legends GN'R, Zeppelin, Stones etc. Others are just teenage angst bands that I stopped relating to when I got my first pubic hair.

Love Alice in Chains. Hate Kurt Cobain.

Grunge seemed like a made up name. The bands that were popular in the 89-96 era from the pacific northwest sounded different than other bands but kind of similar to each other. Of those bands Alice In Chains led the pack, IMHO YMMV.

I always saw AiC as a band caught up in the whole Grunge thing, they were misunderstood metal

I agree with you there although if forced to take a genre I would say more hard rock. Great band with amazingly harmonized vocals.

they had vocal harmony mastered for sure, and the guitar riffs and solos are this strange, beautiful fusion of classical, spanish, and metal.

the CNN report on Laynes death disgusts me... MJ gets a month, he gets 45 seconds :?

I can't stress the term 'forced' enough. I hate genre in music.

Well Neil Young was a big influence on grunge--so for that reason deserves some credit, but he wasn't really the originator--he has played a lot of different styles and makes them all his one.

He is one piece of the puzzle of grunge, but as was mentioned, not one band or person created it. It just happened.

And I do like Neil Young.
he was a big influence on my playing, but I'm not really a grunge player.
