I'm a little late to this topic...but I have trouble calling Neil Young grunge. I know he was an inspiration to a lot of grunge artists, and a lot of them "copied" his style of guitar playing, but I think he fits in more with the jam band segment, or even rock like tom petty etc...I do agree with Soundgarden being pretty much the first band I saw in jean shorts, steel toe boots, and flannel shirts. Everything before that and even still during that time was leather pants and mesh shirts, with massive teased hair. Nirvana, I think is completely on the other end of the spectrum. They were a major force in the grunge movement when it was at it's peak, and after Cobain died the whole scene fell apart. So in a way I think Nirvana was more responsible for the demise of grunge than they ever were at creating it. Just my opinion.
I still like Pearl Jam the most out of all the grunge bands, I think their music has stood the test of time better than a few of the others mentioned.

for those that deny Neil Young to achieving the grunge sound

from the album Rust Never Sleeps in 1979

Rust was a milestone album to say the least, BUT the best off that album was not Hey hey.

It was this one right here....

Powderfinger.
This is a live version, and the words are as powerful as the music behind it.

+1!

I'm not certain that there ever was a studio version of this song though, was there?

No Arjay, I don't think there was a studio version.

The rumor goes that Neil wrote this song and was trying to sell it to Lynyrd Skynyrd, this was just before there plane crash. The deal fell through at that point.

Neil then sat on it and first recorded it on Rust.

My comment that it was a live version was more towards the You tube video, as there are some that are just the album cover and the song playing.
This one was him live doing the song, and a bit different then the one on Rust.

It did sound different from the LP. And I'd rather watch it with the actual stage video.

Thanks mucho for posting it.

no it isnt, because he never played grunge. his music is almost nothing like grunge except for the distortion in hey hey, but even then its a difference of light years between him and grunge

It's all a matter of opinion. Everyone here has a different one. Some of Neil Young's stuff can definitely fit the definition of Grunge. Listen to "Ragged Glory"'. No reason to get upset over different opinions even if you think they're wrong.

Here's another point of view.

All of those that called Neil Young are incorrect, he is clearly folk, everyone wears flannel, and the only reason why people continuously mention Hey Hey My My is because it was quoted in Kurdt Cobaines farewell note, he was an influence not a part, lets just all watch Hype!, no single band started grunge, it was a network of northwest bands: Soundgarden brought the trippy metal vibe, Mudhoney offered the angst and speed, Nirvana brought it into the mainstream and gave it melodies, Pearl Jam slowly killed it, Stone Temple Pilots exploited it, Mother Love Bone died because of it, Green River gave it the legendary progressions. It was a regional sound, not just one band, ripped off and slowed down power chord progressions and $@!&#* improve solos, 50-100 attended gigs at bars and friends quitting and joining bands every month. Really if you want a definitive carrier of Grunge that would be Sub Pop Records, the main man being Jack Endino, where everyone started.

Neil Young is a man who wears a lot of different hats and plays a lot of different types and styles of music not just Folk. Grunge killed itself it really didn't need any help. It was destined to just go away. I don't see what the big deal is. Every genre of music had its day. The "San Francisco Sound", "The Philly Sound", East Coast, West Coast Rap. The truly great stuff stays. I can't stand all the drama about who started what. Grunge is pretty much white noise and hollering anyway and the lyrics always seem whiny. The only thing worse for me is Emo music. Every generation needs some kind of music to call their own and no one is allowed to encroach on a another style if they ever played something else. You're old and played Folk music so you can't possibly play Grunge. LOL

I don't think Young's song "F*!#in' Up" is considered a Folk song

I still consider Young Grunge before there was Grunge.
