I love that people stupidly voted Nirvana without taking into consideration Grunge's first big hit was Mudhoneys "Touch Me I'm Sick" in 1988, one year before Nirvana even made Bleach and almost four years before Nevermind was complete

as far as i know it wasnt much of a "big hit" but more of a "s**t hot underground band"

Many grunge bands were out before them, but I remember clearly that as soon as the Smells Like Teen Spirit video was aired, was the moment that 80's hair metal ended, and grunge got big.

+1 I'm a geezer and pretty much saw tons of garbage come and go.

green river...i dunno who the hell called neil young the godfather of grunge...but i voted mudhoney as green river is not there.
but really, the whole term grunge is just cheap seattle sound rip off. as big as a fan i am of the "grunge" bands, i dont consider, mudhoney, nirvana, soundgarden, pearl jam etc to be grunge anymore. they dont sound barely anything alike apart from there all raw. i like to think of them as indie rock, cause they're all so unique. thats just IMO.

huh.....i guess i'll reveal it now

the correct answer is (drum roll please)

SOUNDGARDEN

yes, it is true. They were the first band to sign to a major label making grunge "mainstream". Although Neil is the godfather of grunge (for those that deny, listen to hey hey my my). And they were the first grunge band to form. Not Green River. Soundgarden formed in 1985. Although Green River was recognized more. Soundgarden made grunge, popular if you will. Nirvana just made it even more mainstream.

Although there is going to be major debate.....

actually none of those...... twas green river.... the first to have that sound (the melvins early stuff was more or less hardcore punk, then sludge metal).... also, members of green river would go on to form mudhoney, mother love bone, and pearl jam

Neil Young originally had the sound

If Neil Young is in the mix, then I must insist that the band that founded this type of sound be included.

The Kinks.

listen the album Rust Never Sleeps and Live Rust. And the songs Cinnamon Girl and Cortez the Killer

"As a style of music, it is generally characterized by 'dirty' guitar, strong riffs, and heavy drumming." The musical definition of grunge (not according to wikipedia, but according to my professor Mr. Bowen)
