Who was the first band to actually start the Grunge movement?

I'll reveal the answer in 5 days

I voted for Neil Young - - he was grunge before there was grunge.

actually none of those...... twas green river.... the first to have that sound (the melvins early stuff was more or less hardcore punk, then sludge metal).... also, members of green river would go on to form mudhoney, mother love bone, and pearl jam

Most definetly Nirvana.

Agreed. Cobain was a huge fan of the Melvins before he started doing his thing so they should be before Nirvana but I also agree that Neil Young is most likely the Godfather of Grunge.

The only thing I liked about Grunge is that it killed big hair spandex Metal. That was getting real old. Remember Metal Ballads? Yow, Guys with bigger hair than my old girlfriend scared me. I never liked Nirvana or the whole Grunge thing in general. It went from one extreme to another. From Metal guys who were technical robots who played a lot of notes with no feeling to guys who didn't have a lot of technical talent but screamed at you with a lot of emotion. I heard it all, I was called ignorant and you don't understand etc, etc. But it just my opinion and no big deal. I am ignorant when it comes to the finer details of Grunge. I just know what I like.
IMO the only thing Kurt Cobain did was singlehandedley drive the price of old Fender Mustangs through the roof. Young guitarists were cheated out of being able to buy a real vintage instrument at a fair price. It's a shame really. They were student model guitars that were really cheap way back. The way I look at it, as soon as a Grunge musician does a Rolling Stone interview, and becomes a MTV sensation and does something unplugged, they sold out. A heads up, this is just my opinion and I'm not looking to argue.

Thrash killed spandex, Grunge just killed their label spots, but probably Mudhoney or Mother Love Bone, but if were talking roots youve got Sonic Youth, My War era Black Flag, Butthole Surfers
