Quick question, for my electronics gurus. I usually use about 20 or 22 gauge solid copper wire to wire my guitars.

Is there any advantage or disadvantage to using a much thicker gauge like 12 gauge? I scored 3 spools (500' each) of 12 gauge copper wire and I'm wondering what I could use it for.

thanks,

~Kong

Hi Kong,

The advantage in using thicker wire is less resistance. Although with short wires like those in guitars, there won't really be much difference using thicker wire, but it certainly won't hurt anything to use it. If it is solid copper wire, it may be difficult to use in small spaces (harder to bend). Like nikininja said, that type of wire might be perfectly suited for speaker wires more than anything. :)

Yes, less resistance but 12 AWG in a guitar would be overkill IMO...

Speaker wire is a good alternative.
