Many families and countries have different traditions for the big Christmas Dinner and I was wondering what the widespread forum families had for their dinner. Here in Newfoundland and Labrador the main traditional Christmas dinner is turkey with the famous Newfoundland meal Jigg's Dinner with pease pudding.
Jiggs dinner is salt beef or pork ribs(of course it has to be the type unique to NL)boiled in a huge pot with potatoes, turnip, carrot, cabbage and/or turnip greens and parsnip-for those who like it. Pease pudding is yellow split peas put in a cotton "puddin' bag" and boiled along with the Jigg's dinner. The turkey stuffing is made using NL savory instead of the sage and other herbs that most places use mixed in with bread crumbs with lots of butter, chopped onions and pepper.
Our family also always has my special recipe candied sweet potatoes. For Boxing day I do a glazed ham by first boiling the ham for 2 hours in orange juice and cloves and then baking it with a glaze made up of mustard, brown sugar, cloves, pineapple juice and orange zest.I then garnish it with orange and pineapple slices for the last hour of cooking.
I wonder if my compatriot Voodoo Blues has access to any of our NL cooking fare where he is.

Ours dinner is some kind of fish for the main course and the Christmas day is pretty much a repeat of the thanks giving (mo' turkey). We are big on new year too, where a whole pig is roasted and smothered in beer.

Love them feasts 8)

I usually cook up a turkey, home made stuffing, mashed taters, gravy, and rolls. Cranberry sauce, Pumpkin and Chocolate pies are also on the menu.

Chocolate.
Turkey.
Pigs in blankets (sausages wrapped in bacon then roasted)

Loosely interspersed around a mountain of pickled onions, pork pie, mince pies, ham, salmon and pheasant.
It's the one time of year when I make a point of not drinking. (someones gotta stay sober, right?) And the beer takes up too much room.

Gluttony a go-go

Usually turkey...however this year my wife and I are alone with our 2 year old. As such we have decided to go a little different and smoking a brisket Montreal style.

PS Every newfie I know loves that "food", but I'm sorry I just don't get it. lol

Guit,
What time is dinner??? That sounds wonderful. here in our household we have the traditional Roast beef, Mashed potatoes, corn, noodle pudding(a tradition from Mrs ABS side which is amazing) and I make a Bushe de Noel(from my mother's side). I also take out a nice bottle of wine from my family's vineyards and enjoy the evening.

ABS :D

ABS, I saw a program on PBS about the Adirondacks. I can see why you love it there so much. Merry Christmas. :)

Traditionally it would be ptarmigan (both the google translate and the computer dictionary translated rjúpa to thathttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Ptarmigan) but because me and my father aren't the best hunters around, so it's gonna be turkey this year... again  .

The menu is going to look like this:
A sort of shrimp salat with toast
Turkey and lot of laufabrauð (no english translation)
Sherry Pudding with a hidden almond (the one who finds the almond gets a price)
Coffee and lot of cookies while opening the gifts.
And end the night with hot chocolate and cream while reading the christmas post.

BTW. Icelanders celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve. Church bells start to ring in Christmas at precisily 18:00.

Our usual is turkey with stuffing, mashed turnip, mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts, followed by pumpkin pie.

But all of your feasts sound so good!! Can we come for dinner?

We are all so fortunate to have an abundance like this - something I try not to forget.

Peace,

This year is gonna be citrus brined turkey (my specialty), New York strips for the red meat lovers, mashed potatoes with giblet gravy, stuffing, green bean casserole, biscuits (were a little too country for dinner rolls...lol), cranberries, candied yams, and whatever else makes it to the table...we have a big family, and will probably end up with some El Salvadorian food from my bro-in-laws family. And lots and lots of homemade pies, cookies and other delectable sweets. With a healthy dose of rockstar, coffee and cigarettes on the side.
Man, now I'm hungry...

The one thing I don't miss about Newfoundland is the food!

We're doing turkey, potatoes, carrots, gravy & dressing... no salt beef or cabbage. :D

Sure do wish I had some savory though.
