As someone who has been impacted several times by the devastating effects of drunk driving I can't be emphatic enough in discouraging people from driving drunk. If you suspect in the slightest way that you may be impaired please don't drive you may be saving many people from forever dreading the coming of the Christmas season. If you see a friend that's had too much to drink do whatever it takes to stop them from getting behind the wheel, even if it means physically restraining them.If you are gigging please remind the patrons not to drink and drive and if you must even offer to drive some of them yourself-I have and have felt better for it.Anyway I hope everyone has a safe and Happy Christmas-or whatever other festivities you may be celebrating.Enjoy your drinks but leave your keys in a safe place other than in your cars ignition.BTW our province has enforced a zero tolerance law whereas if you register less than .008 you automatically loose your licence for 7 days.

Hi Guitslinger, I just read your previous post about your daughters friend Shane dying as a result of DUI. That is a crying shame! I only drink occasionally at home when I know I won't be leaving the house, but over the holiday season I worry about some drunken fool taking out family and friends. I just don't see the fun in getting blind drunk and being a menace to society, I must be getting old :(

I read your earlier post... Not much to say... Just that my heart goes out for all involved.

I wonder though why we have to keep learning these terrible lessons.

Bumping. Well I could add that many years ago, where I was working at that time, a customer came to pick up his car at the garage and he was so drunk that the boss refused to give him his car keys and sent him home by cab. The next day, the customer came back sober and before he left with his car, he thanked the boss for what he did. On another occasion, during one of our own garage's Christmas party, the boss sabotaged "temporarily" a car so the owner couldn't crank his engine over and leave the place while totally wasted. Sure enough, his car was miraculously fixed the next day but the guy was so pissed off, he couldn't understand why we wouldn't let him leave while he was drunk, because he was absolutely convinced that he was OK to drive his car. Those are the two experiences that i've had in the past. A few years after that the government started different programs to make people think about drinking and driving, drink responsibly and so on. Now one would think that everybody is aware of the situation, but I guess that there is always going to be a total moron somewhere to drink, drive and kill people.
If you can prevent something like that from happening, do the right thing.
Merry Christmas to all and a safe Hollidays
Claude.

Guit,
I can totally understand and absolutely agree with what you say! My brother was murdered by a drunk driver. I say murdered becasue that is exactly what it is/was. I have no use for anyone who drives drunk and on occasion have to kick the living snot out of my friends that have!
ABS :D

Very good advice here guitslinger. My young nephew was killed by a drunk driver while walking down the street, well on the sidewalk I might add. The drunk driver attempted to flee the scene, but was too intoxicated to navigate around a light pole and thankfully that bought enough time for the police to arrive on scene. The driver was put on probation and lost his license, nothing else. That still gets to me to this day. So please everyone, if you have some drinks over the holidays keep in mind that you're responsible for more than your own well being when you get behind the wheel, and make the right decision. Be safe everyone, and Happy Holidays...Tim

great advice guitslinger, i think the limit here is 0.005 or something. i have a family friend who constantly drinks and drives, he's already been caught twice, the only reason he's not loosing is cause his dad's a member of the council.

This really should be a common sense, but after a few the common sense tends to betray you (I've been there). The legal limit here is 0,08 I think but after the new years day it's going to be zero tolerence according to new laws, which is good. We have a saying in these part of the world, Eftir einn ei aki neinn." which translate "after one noone drive" (sounds better in Icelandic).

You should ask your dad to have the serious talk with this guy before he kills someone. If he kills someone it might reflect badly on your dad.

Touched us here last year when Troublecall lost his daughter and his son-in-law was critically injured when, astride their motorcycle and waiting to turn into their driveway, they were nailed by a DUI.

Hi Doc-I certainly remember the horrific news about TCs daughter.I have since learned that in El Salvador the sentence for driving drunk and causing death is death by firing squad and in Bulgaria a 2nd offense of just driving drunk is execution-now that's deterant.
Edit:The above info that I had gotten from another forum has been proven as both El Salvador and Bulgaria don't have capital punishment as a matter of fact Bulgaria is considering taking impaired driving from it's criminal status so they can free up the courts to prosecute "more serious"crimes.

I would say so, however.....the legal nuances with respect to the accountability of an impaired driver in the event of an accident would have your pulling out your hair. These laws have to read from the moment a driver orders the first drink..i.e...they have to be zero tolerance laws.....unlawful to have ingested an intoxicating substance in any quantity prior to operating a 'motor vehicle.'

My friends find that if they try to drive drunk they experience "stolen" car keys all of a sudden, sometimes out of their ignition.

If they don't stop going on about it they experience a slap to the head for being such idiots.

It's unacceptable.
