You may remember last week one of my daughter's best friends and his girlfriend were hit by a drunk driver, well tragically Shane passed away on Friday afternoon still in a come since the accident. His girlfriend Leeza is still in grave condition and has already had extensive surgery on one leg and to rectify some of the severe internal damage.Needless to say she hasn't been informed of Shane's death. The monster who ran them over and left them for dead says that he can't recall driving that night despite the front of his Jeep being totaled.Townspeople are now saying that the safest place for him is now in police custody as this is a small closeknit town and this idiot has been a troublemaker since his teens.People are already figuring that he himself may meet with "an accident"if he remains at large showing no signs of remorse.Shane leaves behind an 8 year old son who idolized his father as well as a large family and extended family and group of friends.Ironically Shane and Leeza were walking home after leaving their car behind after having a few drinks. This idiot chose to drive rather than spend $10 for a cab,of course he didn't mind spending hundreds on booze and coke.Due to his actions many people will now be dreading for the Christmas season to come forever as it will dredge up the painful memories caused by Shan's needless and tragic death.
Update:I incorrectly stated yesterday that he had a son but it is a daughter he has.To really add horror to this tragedy, the hospital notified the police that Shane had passed away and then the police notified the media.Shane's wife and daughter heard about his death on the evening news as nobody in the hospital had bothered to notify any of the family of his passing. This same healthcare system has been under intense scrutiny over the past few years for lacklustre performance and this will no doubt add to the fire.
The hospital has apologised-cold comfort to his family after such an outrageous oversight.

So sad, I can't believe that stuff like that can happen in 2010. My condolences to your daughter on the loss of her friend.
Claude.

Thats so terribly sad. Disgusting behaviour from the driver.

I'm against the death penalties, but when something like this tears apart a tiny community a part of me feels like a good old fashioned mob is needed. Driver is a shoddy excuse for a human.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts and words,my daughter and his other friends and family no doubt appreciate them.Finding out the death of a loved one from the news is about the worst way you could imagine to be told.

I just got news from my daughter that instead of flowers Shane's family wants donations made to MADD(Mothers Against Drunk Driving)in his memory.A suitable charity I believe owing to the circumstances of his death.I told her of all the prayers and warm thoughts from the forum members and she really appreciates it.
