i know this has probably been posted in the past so bear with me here...

ive installed a hotrails pickup in the neck position of one of my guitars, and even with the tone pots on the guitar on max treble it still is too muddy to use, whith the same settings the other pups are almost too bright to use...

i know the higher the resistance the brighter the sound, or somthing like that... is there any way i can fit a resistor on the pickup to give it a brighter sound...

btw i have adjusted the setup all over the show, it dosnt seem to make much difference weather the pup is buried in the body or almost touching the strings, slanting the pickup dosnt make a difference either... besides for volume...

any hints or tips, i dont want to change pots and all the rest just for the one pickup as i use them all, or should i rather use my nice hotrails pup as a fridge magnet???

many thanks

Need much more info mate, what hotrails model is it for starters?
Did you put a model wound for the bridge in the neck position?
What is/are the singlecoil(s) where are they positioned?
What are your pot values?

ok the hotrails is a 12 k pup, it is a neck pup, the tone pot is 550k, there is only one tone pot... the middle pup is a tonerider pure vintage pup - 7.8k and the bridge pup is a seymore hb, no idea what the value of it is but it sounds brilliant..., im running this through a BDRI, which my 2 strats sound awsome through... the guitar is question is a ibanez SAS BG360 (discontinued), i know all the fender fans will hunt me down for having a non fender guitar... bt im working on that

any idaes ?

It's too powerfull for neck position. The Coolrails is SD's recommendation for that position.

Also I've no experience of ToneRider pickups but would hasten to have two powerfull humbuckers (resistance rating means nothing) either side of a vintage pickup. That is going to throw your eq all over the place.
Personaly I'd eq the amp to suit the humbuckers and forget about the singlecoil.

What value is the volume pot? It's value affects the circuit more than the tone pot.

Rewire the Hot Rails in parallel instead of series. Chances are, this will solve your problem.

ok niki ill chek that out, the vol pot is also a 550k, and rock star, ill give it a try in // ... but from pasat experiences that has sounded a bit thin... its ok in a normal size hb but the small ones dont always give the same tone...

just a question martain... im guessing when running a hb in parallel one half must be wired in reverse? im not running that hb coil tapped so im guessing i just run it like a normal single but with one half in reverse so it still functions as a humbucker...

No, by reversing half of it, you would be in-phasing the two coils and hence, killing the humbucker effect.

Ha. I even like some of the cheaper ones.

Came across this last month. It's an older 2001 RG 220b. Neck is in perfect condition. Paid $125 for it. I just put a Dimarzio Super Distortion and Air Norton in it. Basic, yet great guitar. I'll be playing this baby a lot.

just for some feed back on the wiring... only got a chance to do it yesterday as ive been away on holiday...

i wired the hb in // and there was almost no sound coming out of it, as if it was canceling itself out (which i expected...) so i re wired it with one half in reverse and it worked perfectly, the nasty muddy sound is gone but i still have the bass and lovley mid response that i wanted to retain...

dunno if it was just me... or i have a funky pup.. alteast i got it working properly...

peace out!

had the same problem with a stacked Dimarzio Fred humbucker a while back, never had the sort of sound/power I expected. Once I got into wiring stuff up more, came across a post somewhere that it was mentioned that other people were having the same trouble
turned out the problem was the factory mislabeled the wire colors in the wiring diagram.
