I ordered some mods for my Epi Valve Junior head and they came today. The brand of the mods is Bitmo. I got the B-verb reverb mod, as well as one with a 3-way voicing switch, Tone knob w/ pull boost.

I installed the reverb this afternoon and it went flawlessly. I'm hoping to get the rest of the mods in tomorrow morning. When I'm done I'll post pics and some sound clips to show how everything worked out.

If any of you guys installed these mods, let me know what you think.

Here's a link to where I got em...

I did some mods to my combo a few years ago: just a couple simple things to increase the gain and overall volume levels.

I'll check out that link, thanks.

Mods are complete. My wife isn't feeling well today, so I can't do a full test but what I was able to test sounds great. I nicked the decal for the Pull Boost knob. There are a ton of different sound combinations this thing can make now. It's nice to have a tone knob and built in reverb (the knob on the far right), but the coolest mod to my ears is the multi voicing switch. It sounds absolutely killer on the "whoa" setting. I'm very happy I was able to install the mods and that everything works, I'm not really an electronics expert.

Here's a pic of the front panel with the mods installed. Before there just was an input and the volume knob.

I am interested in your results. I have an unmodded Valve Jr. right next to me. It has a nice tone only to a certain volume then gets quite muddy. Do your mods increase the high end?

how difficult were the mods?
I have very little experience with electronics, besides wiring pickups, but have been thinking about maybe doing this.
So would you say it is easy enough for a newbie modder, and is it worth it?

thanks

All of the mods probably took me about 4 hours total. About an hour for the reverb mod and 3 hours to do the tone and voicing mods. I am very methodical, and will read each step more than once. I would say it takes just slightly more skill than needed to wire a pickup. It also required drilling a few holes which is no problem.

One just has to be patient and follow each step carefully. I consider myself a newbie modder as I've only wired guitars before. I was actually amazed when I buttoned the amp back up and everything worked perfectly. The instructions that came with the kits were excellent in my opinion and everything was labeled as expected. Maybe I'll shoot a few pics of the modded bits so you can see what it looked like. I'll need to disassemble the amp to do so, so it may be a few days, but I'm willing to share with the group.

Yes that was part of it. That is a voicing switch with the gain getting increased from low, to mo', to whoa!

You can really hear the difference with each voicing. I just have to get a chance to record some sound clips for you guys. I live in a condo, and the amp can be a bit loud, so it's hard for me not to disturb the neighbors, or the wife for that matter. If you like the Valve Jr., you would LOVE the mods imho. The reverb is not bad, but the other mods are excellent.

I don't know all the terminology, but I do think you can get cleaner clearer highs with the tone mod. The overdrive sounds awesome on the whoa! setting. All in all the amp is much more versatile. I'll try and get some sound clips up by sometime next week. I'll be off all week and I'm sure I'll get a few minutes to go through the different settings.

Well done Kong. Do you think the bug has bitten?

Is that a 6v6 head? How high are the highs? I ask because I think it's time to cannibalize a combo I have to build similar. With a less shrill high end than a single ended EL84 amp.

Maybe even put Nutter's footswitchable fuzz into it.

The bug definitely has bitten. I really enjoyed doing the mods. I don't know much about the theory behind them though (sadly). I'm basically a follow the instructions, solder this bit to this bit kind of guy. I've read some of the in depth electronic discussions on the boards here, but I usually glaze over due to being out of my depth on the subject. This amp uses one 12AX7 and one EL84 tube. Re-read your question, the highs can be shrill with the tone on the amp and the guitar turned up, but the amp sounds nice when both are properly adjusted. This is my first and only tube amp thusfar so I don't have much to compare it to.

I do wish I ordered the attenuator kit that would have only been an additional $40 with the other mods.

Thanks for the pat on the back by the way.

Ah Interesting. I was sure it was a 6v6. Shows how far supposition gets you.

Mate I'm just the same. Anyone with a bit of elecrtronics education gets on about technical stuff. I glaze over too. What I found is that hands on is how I learn. A bit dangerous with some circuits, but you'll only get zapped once before your carefull. :P

That $40 attenuator is no doubt the VVR mod??? I must say mate, it's well worthwhile. It can be put in anytime, so don't sweat it. Send the missus to her moms for Christmas and you turn your amp up.

The attenuator I'm talking about is called the Bitmo 10-uator kit. It is an external box. Here is a link ... I would have saved $10 if I bundled it with the other mods I bought.

KONG, thanks so much for sharing. I find myself in the same position as you. EVJ being my first tube amp, and reading a lot about these bitmo mods, but never had a chance to ask someone about it.

As for posting some pics of the mod, if you felt up for it, I know I would certainly appreciate it! This thread has been really helpful.

Again, thanks for the info...... thinking this may be a project I tackle in the new year
