well i do like posts like this. sure it always boils down to "try it yourself", but
usually in posts like this you get some pro/con, and these help you out by showing you some things to look for while you demo the product. in quick music store demos theres always something you forgot to try or didnt know you could do.
so its posts like these that i hope to find things that will help me in my own demo time.

Mr. Way Cool Very good observation. Adverts point out only the positives, nay-sayers only point out the negatives. In reality, everything has some merit and some weaknesses. Its best to hear both sides before spending our money, because once its spent...its spent.

I've been very pleased with my RP250, its very user-friendly- Whenever we try new songs I can change around with the presets and save them to the song (like DESERT for "desert song") you can have hundreds of presets, and even connect it to the pc to further tinker with.

My youth minister has a line 6 pod he absolutely loves. I think both the digitech and line 6 will be your best bet if you want a multi fx board.

Note: the only thing I regret about my RP250 is not having a stomp feature, but I got a distortion pedal to cover that. I think they make some new ones with that feature (as well as a 16 sec loop)

I like my Boss ME-50 unit as it offers most of the effects needed. It does not color the sound of your amp when no effect is being used. It has tuner, noise suppressor, and compressor all in one unit and as someone previously mentioned is built like a tank.

The last thing you'll find with budget multieffects is unreliability. As for them being generic, all pedals these days are. Theres very few manufacturers that will move away from those old boss effects sounds.
It absolutely makes me sick how no one will push for new sounds. The current stagnant state of the whole of the guitar industry/market will kill it quicker than synth's did in the 80's. Everybody wants to sound like some bloke from years ago and few manufacturers will dare to put anything out aside from those given sellers.

I agree Nik...I don't know much 'bout stompboxes and the more I read about every manufacturers version of them I scratch my head and wonder why another TubeScreamer Clone? Or another Wah or another "fill-in-the-blank"? Just how many variations of the same circuit can there be?

I guess it's a "give the people what they want" sales pitch. For a comparative "newbie" like myself I just snicker at it all and use a M-E pedal.

I was at a friends bar where he has live bands come in on weekends...one guitarist had so many pedals it took up half the stage in front of him! I never saw anything like it before! Granted, it's a small stage and barely enough room for a 4-5 man band but his pedals were eating up the space of 2 folks. I stopped counting at 16 pedals... And I know I counted at least 3 green TS boxes...

Nah... you just got to put the money down for a decent one. And the ones mentioned here are great pedals.

plus its fun to create new sounds never done before. I have some effects that sound so different from anything standard... like the "der yah" mode on my RP, which is a really cool distortion + wah effect, sounds like its talking...

If you don't like multi FX but want to try some different sounds, you should check out pedal companies like Electro Harmonix and Catalinbread. They tend to shy away from the usual stuff and its pretty cool 8)

One option is to take tone into your own hands and DIY. You can make several quality pedals. Analoge and True Bypass is the way to go.
