As for artists wanting to try out new material on a unsuspecting crowd, I can think of no worse a idea. How are they going to know if the audience thinks the song sucks or the band sucks, or whether it's just a hard audience (they do happen). When they have nothing to refrence it to. And audience has no prior material to refrence the song to? Theres no basis for evaluation is there? Unless ofcourse it's a society where everything sounds the same. Then you can just judge every band by every other band.

You wouldn't really like being in our band then. 'Cause that didn't phase us at all. Before we reached any level of success, our biggest turning point was when we took on a couple of Indie and Heavy Metal gigs for the first time. We walked in as the only Reggae band on the bill for those shows. True, we didn't know how the crowd would react, but we trusted ourselves as musicians. We like to use the "nothing to reference it to" to our advantage. We walked away from those shows being the most unique and talked about band of those nights. Gained a lot of new fans who we still see at our shows, and started getting asked to bigger shows and venues.

Our band believes that we won't gain much by not taking a few risks. A year and a half later, we won a battle of the bands out of 88-bands. Once again, we were the only Reggae band. There are only about 5-6 Reggae bands in all of Las Vegas, and tons of everything else.. So what were our choices? Once we decided to trust our own songs in any circumstance, we started gaining a much bigger following.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience's version of "Hey Joe" is better than The Leaves version IMHO

covers vs. originals, the vs throws it off because unless it is a tribute type band it is a balancing act mixing covers with originals.

Yeah and no Rollie. You can always do a song your way. I was once demanded of to play a Rory Gallagher (maybe) song, 3 little pigs or something. I thought the original was a boring rock n roll cliche, so turned it into a surf song. Worked, sounded tres cool, sounded like we wrote it. Which I agree is a grey area to tread into. Everything after it comes down to integrity.
