I'm trying to play a hybrid of Hendrix licks with the punk riffs and feel of Nirvana and I already have a Boss DS- 1 Distortion Pedal, so which would be most important to add to my effects chain next: an Electro-Harmonix Classics Small Clone Analog Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal or a Boss BD-2 Blues Driver Pedal ?

BTW: If it matters I'm playing a Squier Bullet Strat with a Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal into a Fender Mustang Combo Amp.

Part of Jimi's trademark sound was the Leslie/Univibe sound as he relied on this form his second album onward.I can get a pretty good approximation of the swirling Univibe type sound with a Danelectro Cool Cat Vibe pedal for only about $55.You can change speed and intensity as well as control the dry/wet signal mix. It's a pretty versatile pedal and a cheap alternative to the real things.I'm not familiar witth the Electro Harmonix pedal you mentioned but I have several of their other pedals and they are just great.

univibe for hendrix, flange for nirvana. the ds-1 with a strat should be great. both hendrix and cobain used marshalls however.

Some kind of fuzz pedal might be good. Just keep in mind that fuzz pedals always sound best through a slightly overdriven amp. The Small Clone would be good if you're into Nirvana.

Another thing you might want to look into is a multi-effects board. I could be wrong, but judging by your current gear and your interest in different effects and amp modeling you're probably more of a beginner/intermediate player. A multi-effects board can save you money in the long run because you'll be able to play around with tons of different effects and it'll give you a really good idea of exactly what you need and what you don't as well as a general idea of what you want to sound like. Buying pedals individually, using them for a while and then decided you don't really need it or want something else can be expensive.

The Mustang amps are loaded with effects already, right?. Are you not happy with any of them? I haven't played the Mustang amps yet, are you able to tweak the effects parameters? Might as well try that first rather than invest in a bunch of pedals.

If you already made your mind up on going the individual pedal route, I'm assuming you're looking into the EHX Small Clone because Coabain used one often. So get one if you want that same sounding chorus on Nevermind. Turn up the rate knob to cop a Hendrix Univibe/Leslie Speaker type sound.

You already have a DS-1, so skip the Blues Driver. If you want another dirt pedal get a fuzz like texasguitarslinger mentioned.

Skip the Blues Driver and get a fuzz!
The E-H Small Clone Chorus will do just fine for Hendrix and Nirvana.

I don't recall a Nirvana song with flange. Chorus most definately. Some phaser too (solo in Heart Shaped Box for example). Can you point out the songs with flanger?

Marshall isn't really that integral to the sound of either guitarist. Some of your favorite Hendrix tunes were with probably recorded with Fender amps. He used Fender often live also among many other brands.
Cobain wasn't all Marshall either. See diagram of his last rig here: http://www.guitargeek.com/rigview/521/ Mesa-Boogie preamp with Crown power amp (yes the cabs happened to be Marshall however). A lot of clean sounds on Nevermind were Vox AC30.
I assume both really didn't care what they toured with or used in the studio as long as it was loud and had the sound they were looking for.

I'm sure there are amp models on the Mustang amps that get in the ballpark of a lot of those tones.

Cobain was fond of a particular silverface Twin Reverb, if I'm not mistaken...I seem to remember an article where his guitar tech saying he would use it for an on-stage feed/monitor for himself. Supossedly during his Unplugged performance it was camoflaged onstage inside another dummy cabinet (to keep up the appearance of it being an "unplugged" show).

Does anyone else remember something about this?

"Fender Twin Reverb. 1982 blackface 135-watt Ultra-Linear model"..."Used for recording "In Utero" (32) and "Unplugged.".

That's a great site for a resource of Nirvana gear. I think it's accurate, but I'm no expert.

Here is an interesting quote on Cobain's dislike of Marshall amps.
"Regarding the Marshalls, Kurt really disliked Marshall amps. Partly, due to the whole hair metal stigma happening in the 80's, and he didn't like the sound of them. I think it was too generic for him. If you recall on his 4x12 cabs, he had his Marshall logos taped over, not removed (which is a simple task), as a statement towards the status associated with owning Marshall gear."source: http://nirvana.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_Nirvana_equipment

Thats a bit like saying Hendrix didn't like Strats. All of AYE was a Marshall and Strat. AXIS was a Vee and Bassman, EL was a mix of anything he could get his hands on.

Hi NC,I would be kind of wary buying a Behringer pedal as they don't have a great reliability track record.Boss makes some pretty good multi effects pedals in the $200-$300 range they also make the features loaded ME-70 for around $300 www.bossus.com .Zoom even makes its G1XN with 15 stompbox and amp models for only around $80, the G2.1Nu for about $200 and the G2Nu for about $200 also , www.zoom.co.jp or www.zoomeffects.com .You could also look into the Rocktron Utopia G100 Guitar System for around $270 www.rocktron.com .Anyway that's a start to get you looking around.
