Hello Everyone,
This is my first post so please be patient with me as I learn how this works. There are so many books on this subject and everyone on the Internet has the best product. Does anyone have a recommendation on a good book and or DVD sets for beginners to learn guitar? In particular beginning blues guitar.
Thanks,
Skippybriggs :?:

Welcome Skippy. My first guitar book was something by Larry Little. Then I went to a Hal Leonard book. For the life of me I cant remember what they are called but I do recommed first learning string patterns and scales. Its going to be boring but after a while you get good and then you can bend notes and it becomes fun. To be honest its all about learning to listen. If you can find someone to play with who has more expierence, try to play with them twice a week. Once a week is always good too.
Lastly, remember that this is fun. Its supposed to be. Few of us set out to become great rock stars. Its because we love what we do.
Remember "Congradulations on starting guitar. You are now better then people who dont play guitar"

Thanks for the information cavsrock08. I will check out both books and use your advice on making it fun. It sounds like I'm on the right track because I've been working on the scales. I just get a little confused when I start looking at tabs, notes and chords. I guess I need to slow down a little.

Thanks,

This isn't blues based, but it is a comprehensive set of lessons:

http://www.learnandmaster.com/guitar/index.html

It's also not free, but I found it a good course and there are plenty of people's reviews on the net if you're interested.

I agree! The Learn and Master course, although a little expensive at $149, is an excellent course. It covers a lot of ground and will take quite a while to complete but is well worth the time it takes. It does focus on being able to read music which I personally like.

Justin Sandercoe's site is pretty good to get started too. It is very laid back and teaches rhythm guitar pretty well.

My personal FAVORITE is the Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method 1-7 (expanded editions). These 7 books are not the easiest method but it does give you a very strong guitar foundation.

Thanks to everyone for your input. The web sites will be a big help in getting me going in the right direction. I look forward to getting my blues on and learning how to play this great instrument.

Thanks again,

Welcome skippybriggs,
I suggest strongly that you study with a teacher as well as from a progressive series of books.
Most importantly is technical ability, I'm referring to hand and finger position as well as posture and guitar positioning when studying, such as would be gained from classical training.

Even though it may not be perceived as fashionable in the rock and blues world, Pedagogy is indispensable if you wish to eventually broaden your musical horizon's, that is to be able to play, SRV as well as Eric Johnson and Pat Metheny or Etudes by Carulli or ???

The point is the better your technique, the easier it becomes to branch out from Blues to Jazz to Fusion to Classical etc...etc..
A prime example of this today would be John 5.

You will need more than one book as you progress but for now I would suggest getting advice from a reputable teacher.

Oh and by the way, as a musician, one never stops learning. There is often something to be gained from other forms of music or instrumentation.

P.S.

Tabs are great, but learning to sight read is well worth the effort since tabs do not indicate the various nuances, such as quarter notes, glissando, to play fortissimo or piano and much, much more...
As sheet music is written, it is as descriptive as the text in a textbook.
More importantly it is a language which requires fluency. :)

as for websites, guitartricks.com cant be beat. part of the site is free,
but the better part has a monthly fee with a 90 day guarantee if you dont like it.
its like $12 a month. best money ive spent on learning in 30 yrs.
try it before you knock it. i bet you stay for a very long time.

as for books, shopchop by matt smith. very good book, covers a lot of ground, and very easy to follow.

Web:
Already mentioned http://www.justinguitar.com is good.

Lots of stuff at http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/lessons/

http://www.nextlevelguitar.com/ does not seem bad, they have a youtube channel of lessons and demos at http://www.youtube.com/user/rockongoodpeople mostly with the intention of selling you on their site lesson packages.

http://steviesnacks.com is a good place for picking up on Texas style blues

Books:
The Fretboard logic series
Hal Leonard Guitar Method Complete edition
DVD Scales and Modes
Music Theory for Guitarists

Live:
Lessons if you can manage it are probably the best way to learn properly.
Get together & jam and learn with others
