why does it seem that everybody removes their tremolo covers? for what reason do you do this?
(the plate that covers the trem springs)

Because they're a pain in the arse. Used mine as an ashtray way back when I smoked. Mine would fall off or get in the way of my muting technique. I finally lost it and when I did, I lost a decent ashtray and my smokes lost their tone. The bad thing is my bridge pieces are all corroded. I bought new screws and chased the threads but now they're really screwed up and need replacing. I have the cheapass cast ones on mine.

Oh okay. Eric Johnson says it effects the tone.LOL Mine's still on. It might be a little easier to change the strings.

Yes I remove my tremolo plate, any time I want to adjust my spring tension. Other than that, I leave them alone. I do not have any issues with them, and personally I cannot tell the difference in tone with or without them being on.

With my trem decked and for what other reason, when im changing strings, the high e doesn't quite line up with the holes in the plate. So instead of having to unscrew the plate then screw it back on when i have to change strings i just leave it off.

I keep them on after I mod the holes with a Dremel to make string changing easy.

Ritchie Blackmore and others were doing it long before that. I think Hendrix sometimes went coverless, if memory serves.

Mine stay on guitars that came with them, but I don't put 'em on new builds.

However, the cover does have the crucial advantage of preventing pubic hairs getting caught in the springs and painfully torn out when playing the guitar in the nude. Which of us has not suffered that eye-watering Sunday morning injury at some point or other...?

Cheers - C

When first setting up my guitars, it's something I've been known to spend 2 months doing.

Some of em have the backplate on, some of em have it removed. The vintage style plates get taken off. I can't be dealing with taking it off whenever I change strings.

Only if I change the guage of strings or decide to float the tremolo. Other than that, no.

Nah; c'mon. We can't have secrets, far as guitar playing is concerned.

The instant Brazilian, courtesy of our trem springs. Yowza! That's a pain we need to share - right?
