They are a goddamn mainstream mtv/hot topic band with no ties to any scene. No sense of the DIY asthetic. You want punk rock, look for Propagandhi, Defiance OH, Cobra Skulls, Rumspringer, Hamburger Help Me, and a thousand other bands that are 100% independent, support local acts, support the scene, and keep it totally real.

Green day are milloinaires who write bland pop rock. They're for kids who are too scared to listen to Bad Religion. It's carefully crafted, cookie-cutter garbage for suburban kids.

+1 Exactly right. It's middle class kid pop. Best way of putting it.

See the thing I can't get is punks having a pop at bands like Green Day, Busted and Mcfly.

I used all of those bands on my eldest daughter, though I did start her off with the Ramones. Well no kid of 7 wants to listen to the Exploited do they?

Now my kid, Alana, a very thoughtfull child that will not be told by anyone. Doesn't listen to many punk bands anymore. But She has developed a excellent BS radar, probably better than my own. She can spot it a mile off. Despite listening to a lot of chart crap.
Sorry lads I'm 38 thats as close as I get to relating to youth, through my kids.
These bands do have their uses. Granted I started her on Xray Specs and the Ramones way before any of that stuff, but they were pop punk too.
Now I hate MTV as much as anyone but thats easy to say when they aint offering you mucho spondoolicks for a appearance. I can comfortably say 'I'll never go on MTV' but they aint asking very much.
Bands do outgrow their roots. Bob Marley did. So did the Pistols and the Ramones (30K strong audiences in latin America).
Is that their fault or do they simply seek to reach as many people as can enjoy them?
A lot of Hardcore bands stay underground because their rubbish, sorry to say. Aside from a momentary flash in the pan they can't entertain a audience. Lets face it thats what music is all about. Express yourself and entertain those who feel the same way. With that in mind would not any liberal minded punk want to reach as many as they could?
The road to hell is paved with good intentions, so they say

There is nothing wrong with having a huge audience if you are genuine, no one talks $@!& about The ramones, Bad Religion or Social Distortion. They are bands that stayed and continue to stay active, true and great. but draw huge crowds. I'd throw Against Me! in that catagory also.

Sex Pistols are bullshit too. They were just a carefully crafted image created by Michael McLarem, the same $@!&#*% who formed Bow Wow Wow. If you want true punk you need to look to your local dives. Find the scene.

I'd have to agree with that about the Pistols. The band on their only album wasn't the band that was famous. Lydon, Matlock, and the studio engineer. The engineer had to record all the guitar parts and redo the drums. Jones and Cook couldn't do it.
(Incidentaly the wonderful guitar sound on that album is a LP into a Twin, then the same again a octave down, mixed in low to give it that marching stormtrooper sound). There were so many versions of Never Mind because it had to be recorded and recorded so many times. One album in 3 years, getting on a par with Axl Rose, particularly for a new band.
I hate bashing the Pistols, because they were a big part of my life as a kid. As they were to the majority of punks at a early age. They were a sham though. You get so many people that were nearly in the pistols cropping up because Westwood and Mclaren looked at loads of people for the band they were going to manage.

Even after the album release they orchestrated Matlocks dismissal and Vicious's joining. The main reason (I reckon) for Lydon hating Mclaren so much. Throw all that image, money, drugs and fame at a kid without much upstairs and far too easy to manipulate. Course he's going to wind up dead. Lydon as he puts it, lost a dear friend.

Another reason I hate to bash the Pistols is that they were for the UK, very much what the Ramones were for America a couple of years before. Everywhere they went, you got bands forming. They certainly didn't start the punk movement, but their high media profile certainly bought it to everyone. More so than the Ramones, Clash or Subs did.

I hate the Pistols, but I love the Pistols too. I was certainly impressed at them calling the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame museum a pxxx stain and refusing to attend their induction. Though they never formaly withdrew the right to be associated with the organization, they seized the opportunity to make a vulgar comment about it. Something that pretty much sums up the bands business model.

Not at all Riley, they were famous a year before Vicious joined em. They were nothing more than a boy band, albeit a vulgar one. Put together for one reason, image. A good example is Kevin Roland (ex Dexy's Midnight Runners) who auditioned for Lydons job. A far better vocalist and frontman. Lydon got the job simply because his home made 'I hate Pink Floyd' shirt grabbed Mclarens attention. Mclaren and Westwood were running a clothing shop specializing in bondage gear at the time.

Then again, I think all boy bands are vulgar.

Because Matlock could play and was a perfectly reasonable, presentable character. Most who meet him remark how amiable a fellow he is.
Not really the image needed for the Pistols. So they got viscous in who couldn't play, talk or behave like a human being.
Like I said, musicianship wasn't important, image was. Just like Boyzone or Take That or Nsync.
