Marvin

I grew up round them guys. I know their big on the scene abroad, but in the UK their just another punk band, normal blokes that you'll see in the local shop. Overfamiliararity I guess. GBH are a easy target, but pretty much all of em have done similar. Maybe I'm too hard on em.
The UK scene is absolutely dead through similar acts charging extortionate amounts (£12-1500) a gig and just not delivering, not attracting a crowd either, maybe getting 10-20 people in. Everybody waiting for the once a year excursion to Blackpool for the wasted festival.

Apathy in the UK, on the part of the audience no doubt.

Nothern Europe is a stark contrast. Much more like the better parts of the US scene. Italy, Germany, Nothern Spain and France in particular. Really hardcore, really anarcho, organized too. People in those groups of pensionable age too, showing to my mind how the community/family spirit of those countries is a part of the scene rather than something they have rebelled against like in the UK.

Now I'm quite removed from all that. Miss lots of it, other parts not so much.
For me, now the Ramones have gone. It's all over when this bloke calls time

The one act that do live the spirit of 77. Harper is fantastic, my utter hero. 67 had 3 heart attacks onstage. Has a flat in Brixton that he uses for a holiday 2 weeks a year, because the rest of his life since 1980 has been a endless tour of the world. Really approachable, everyones a equal, really fair with other bands. All round nice bloke, if I could pick my grandad he'd be my choice.

Pop-punk for the win

I like Green Day... def not punk, but pop-punk for sure. Kinda like asking if All Time Low and Mayday Parade is punk... nope still pop-punk and I still like it

I bought 21st Century Breakdown the day it came out ... as I'm more of a poppy guy... guess I'm a sell out

Hey Niki, Sounds like you came up right in the middle of it. I'll bet you've got some tales to tell too. I think the UK scene was what all the Punk of the day used as a model. Lots of great bands on both sides of the pond. The problem I think is that when a Band starts touring, making records, and needing cash to support the Rock-N-Roll Lifestyle, They have to make concessions to whoever is signing the check. The fortunate few bands that get to write their own rules are few. Some Bands don't mind at all, (Green Day) others it wrecks. I played Drums in a local Punk act the last time around, and Had a great time. (I didn't have to think about it too much) Lots of partying and got to play with a couple of bigger acts as an opener( Casulties, Misfits,) anyway I can see that when a Punk band has to make ends meet and sign a deal, they have to pay that money back and they have to sell records, so thats what it becomes. I last played out in 1997 and our band broke up, too much of too much you know? I had a good time But I now realize that a Band can only go so far in that scene before they have to "Sell Out" or get a real Job. There the lucky few that get to make it big on their own terms. Anyway, That's Rock-N-Roll. Peace 8)

Marvin, that's my point all them blokes have day jobs too, normal everyday fella's. But you get one or two that seem to think their absolute Madonna type stars that treat everyone like crap. On the other hand the more down to earth types are brilliant and more than make up for the idiots.
The most down to earth was Bones from Discharge. The man who took that fifth chord put to good use by Link Wray and Ray Davis and turned it into what spawned thrash/hardcore/crossover. Just a normal humble bloke who you can happily have a jar and chat about the football with.

As for too much, yep exactly what led to my departure too. As far as I'm concerned punk and the current (very underground) 50's rockabilly revival are about the only valid forms of rock n roll these days. Everything else is far too overproduced, overhyped and unrewarding. Theres no spirit of grab a instrument and make music anymore. No desire to excite, just a morbid obsession to constantly rehash the past. And guitarists wonder why dance and rave music outsells rock by a thousand to one.

Oh to be a kid with just 3 chords and the truth again.

i have always put bands like greenday, blink 182, sum41, the offspring exc in to a group i like to call pansy punk. its like pop with a splash of punk
and i do agree that their stuff was closer to actual punk rock in thier earlier albums.

though they may not be punk i still enjoy all of these bands they bring me back to the mid-late nineties everytime

You know you're a punk band if people start to argue whether your punk or not. You know when you're a hardcore punk band when nobody questions your degree of punk-ness ^^

I dont think I can say they are punk its truest form. (Is "truest" a word. If not I made a word yay). I can say they are slightly punk influenced but I wouldnt put them in with other, more defined, punk bands. I like them though. Back when I was younger Green Day got me into a lot of "real music" and was a huge influence in starting guitar.

Nope, waaaay to "poppy".
Not angry or aggressive enough to be punk.

greendays first 2 : completely punk..... just added distortion (every genre evolves at least a little)
offsprings first 3 : punk, punk/amazing, punk..... again, more distortion
greenday's dookie and insomniac : still pretty punk sounding, just made a tad bit more radio friendly with better sound quality
offspring - everything after smash : utter garbage, save for 2 or 3 songs on ixnay on the hombre

I say they were punk until around Nimrod and then then went pop punk.
