Good melody is what has kept punk alive. The hardcore crowd tend to get lost up their own rear ends a lot of the time, dismissing anything slower than 180bpm. But the simple fact is that punk has incorporated a vast amount of styles over the years (with the exception of classical styles I can't think of any not used) . Someone on this thread made a good point way back that it's not about music but lifestyle.
Brian makes a excellent point, it's not their fault their popular.

I can definitely see how GreenDay have changed over the years. All I heard on American Idiot was a band wanting to sell records compared to what I heard from my daughters room on Slappy Hours. Their earlier stuff was written for themselves, not targeted at a audience. Despite not liking any of their stuff, I'd have to deem them Punk back then. For what thats worth.




Sounds like they took the same advice Metalicbore took before recording the Black album.
