...I'd regard myself as an amature player, but I really amn't the one for guitar theory....my friend just started learning guitar and he said that he learned (whatever chords he learned) in the key of g. What does this mean?

I think what he is referring to is how there are specific notes that make up the scale for the key of E minor or A major, and there are also specific chords that go with the notes for the key of E minor or A major. So I think your friend has learned the chords that correspond with the key of G (major). If none of what I am saying makes sense, then I must ask, do you the the names of the notes on the fretboard? If not, you need to at least have an understanding of that basic theory of why certain notes sound good with certain chords and other basics of music/guitar.

I just ask about the notes on the fretboard, because I thought everyone who played at least knew that until I asked a player I was playing with to hit me a "G-chord" and this guy who had been playing for 3 or more years had no clue what I was asking for until I told him,"Play me a bar chord on the 3rd fret."

Thanks. I know the names of the notes, but I still don't get it. lol What do you mean when you say in the key of Em or A. I'm a total idiot when it comes to theory, so sorry if I'm causing grief. lol

For the key of G the chords would be: G, F, Eb, D, C, Bb, and Ab

A basic I, IV, V7 progression in the key of G would be G major, C major, and D7.
