As many of you know, we are currently using a rather outdated version of phpBB to power these forums and we have been sorely due for an upgrade for quite some time. I'm pleased to report that we are finally hoping to achieve this upgrade this month. This will not only get us on more current / robust software but will also enable a number of newer features that folks have been asking for such as private messaging, personal avatars, more complete user profiling, etc.

The transition is going to require some downtime, and I've been pondering the best way to do it. We can either shut the forums down altogether for a few days (say, Wednesday through Friday) while we do the upgrade, or I can let the forums keep running during that time under the understanding that any posts made during that window will be lost once we turn on the "new" forums. Any preferences from folks here?

Also, when we come back live one of the first things that will be required is for folks to do a password reset -- you can use the exact same password as what you're using currently if you want, but we will still need to reset it regardless. More details will be forthcoming on that.

Shutting it down for a few days makes more sense.

Thank you for the heads up Brad. I can only imagine what it's going to be like in your work place while you and your team make the conversion, best of luck for a glitchless transition. My only question is if all of our Forum's threads and posts will still be there once you switch to the new system?

Hi Brad, do what you think is best, but I also suggest the shut down.

+5!

(or izzit "6"?)

The personal avatars are something I've been looking forward to for a long time -- the canned "cookie-cutter" choices really did nothing for me.

Thanks for the input thus far, folks -- a complete shutdown definitely makes things far 'cleaner' and should also help minimize confusion when we come back. (i.e., I can just see folks complaining about pouring their heart into a post and having it disappear when the forums return.)

Brad,

Superior planning yields superior results. Shut it down entirely so your group can work unfettered for as long as required.

As always, thank you and your associates for this forum.
