This isn't 200 watts buy it's pretty cool and a great backup amp you can put in a jacket pocket.

And you'll need a decent preamp with the 44. The speakers not really a problem cos you're building one of them anyways.

What I would say is that it looks a ideal small amp if your a multieffects or big pedal user and want just another pedal to sit on your board that will negate the need for anything other than a speaker.

Probably, thats exactly what it looks geared up to do. Bit of a gimmick if you ask me. If you're lugging speaker cabs around and effects boards as well as your guitar. You may aswell include a head in your luggage too.

I think Doc's is a notch up the ladder from the Lunchbox model...maybe the Club?

It's not that these little puppies can't handle the bass--they're just not voiced for it! Try one with an EQ pedal and boost the low mids...hokey smokes!

I played them both and no you don't need a preamp with the 44 Mag and the Lunchbox sounds like a lunchbox with the stock speaker. It's really boxy. Sounds like a lunchbox. You would need a speaker with either. Come on guys 200 watts through a 6.5" speaker? you need a real speaker. The amp was fun, but it was like my Pignose on steroids.

What so you can get enough tonal variation to suit a lot of users out of just a volume dial and a bright switch?

You'd need some kind of tone shaping going on infront of it, whether it's just a eq and chorus pedal or a rack preamp.

You get a lot more tonal variation than you might think. How many one knob wonders are on the market. It sounds great with a Strat and the last time I looked, mine had three pups two tone and one volume knob. That's plenty of tonal variation for me. Thing is no amp of any kind can suit all players. The EH 44 mag would make a decent backup amp that fits in a gig bag. The Crate Power Block was great too. I'm just saying most small amps really benefit from external speakers. The Lunchbox makes a much better power amp than it does a combo.

Back in my early days of playing, another guitarist & I would go to open mic/jams and ask to play together with the band--he on guitar, me on harmonica. I would grunt my big ol' silverface Bassman Ten up on the stage and he would set his tiny little solid state Gallien Kruger guitar amp on top of my amp. The GK had two six- or eight-inch speakers in it, and was about the size of a large lunchbox.

People laughed at his amp...until he turned that sucker up and rattled the walls. I don't know what the wattage rating on that thing was, but it was LOUD...as loud as my Bassman Ten!

It was a good amp for shred/metal/hard rock, but it didn't really work for anything past that.

As all speaker manufacturers will tell you, speaker size matters little in comparison to resonant peak and correct matching to the speakers intended application.

I go by what my ears tell me and the Lunchbox sounds like a lunchbox. I know what you mean, I've heard some pretty great sounding tiny speakers but mostly in stereo systems. The Lunchbox I tried lacked any real bass response and got raspy as the volume went up.

There's science in that skill (matching speaker resonance) that I neither possess nor understand...

I just want to figure out how to make my '63 Reissue Vibroverb (2x10 brownface combo) break up earlier/at lower volumes. You can't remove one of the tubes due to the way the circuit is built, and the amp is just too loud at breakup volumes. For guitar, I use overdrive or fuzz or distortion pedal(s), but using a pedal for overdrive sounds like poo for harmonica...the amp sounds great for clean harp, but what would Little Walter say? 8)
