Ok here we go.

The guy was probably attenuating that small amp down below the 1 watt threshold that all speakers seem to have. No speaker sound good with a tiny amount of power running into it, leading to that buzzy sound.

Also consider whilst balckheart amps are good bedroom amps, they aint the best amps in the world. Running a Blackheart at 10 and running a Marshall DSL/TSL at 10, then attenuating will yeild very different results.
I don't know anyone who regularly attenuates a amp when recording.
All the sound comes from the speaker. Aside from the eq, that's the next place you should look for the culprit of bad tone.
As I said in that other thread, speaker matching is of prime importance. You can't attenuate a plexi into 2 vintage accurate cabs to half power and get that Hey Joe tone, the cabs simply aren't seeing enough power.
Thats why Weber and DrZ and all them lot put eq controls on their attenuators. To mask the sound of what's coming out the amp and try to make it fit what the amp should sound like on full tilt.

Aside from that you don't know how the guy has recorded that demo. He could have used some crappo binatone microphone into his pc. He could have overloaded whatever it's capable of.
Also you can't just set a good clean sound and then whack the gain up and expect it to sound the same but distorted. No amp works like that and no one in history could do that. Not Clapton, Hendrix not non of em.

Attenuators are great tools, but not for everyone. I love mine, others hate em. Theres a lot in how you use em, but not all of it. Best off to borrow one and see if it's for you.

thanks niki and a "tool" they are.
ive never messed with one but havebeen thinking about getting one for my blues jr and my soon to be rebel20. i believe the 50 watt will do mefine asthe amps im talking about arent over 20watts.
using the niki and weber rule of thumb that should be plenty right?

The rule is, don't expect em to make a Blues Jr sound like a cranked Marshall 18watt or AC30.
They wont do that!
What they will do to a Blues Jr that I can tell you from experience of using both is give you a good, hot, compressed clean sound. Like the better class of country guitarist. If you can hear past the fact that the speaker isn't being pushed the same way as previously said country guitarist has his speakers pushed by the amp.
Or a damn good rockabilly tone.

Not meaning to detract from the BJR but that's where it is most suited. It's never going to give a good clear driven sound. The preamps all wrong as is the bias type and level. There thats out the way, focus on the positives. It's made to do a job, that job isn't what it's marketed for.

What sound do you want? That is the question. The Rebel20 is ok for a throw around amp. It's never going to sound like one thing or the other but approximate a few amps. Like the better type of modelling amp, but valve. The shortcomings are just not as exaggerated.
If you can pick a sound you're far better off to go for a amp dedicated to that sound, though you will be somewhat limited when you try to step outside that sound.

Hey Skynard got a decent country sound out of Plexi's, or did they?
Be sure what you see onstage with a band is actually what you imagine they record with.

Whaddya want? Thats the crux of it.

Yeah but what sound do you want? Not what volume.

I use an attenuator with my JCM800 KK, in the house. It's better than the amp on it's own turned down, tonally. It's nowhere near as quiet though.
Just don't expect the world and all it's tonal treasures mate. They won't do that.
Honestly borrow one before you consider em. I get great Slash tone out of my JCM 800 4211, but the master volume gets me there aswell. It's a lot of dough to lay out on a one trick effect, and that's all it is. I used mine for rehearsalls, auditions and gigs aswell as home use. I really and truely belive it got/gets me in more band spots than any amount of technique. A guitarist than can deliver a good driven sound, that aint too loud and knows when to open up.
If it was just for home use, I'd have done better shelling out for a good effects processor like a Tech 21 Gmajor or something.
Application is the key factor.
