+1000000000 for Patti Smith and the Velvet Underground and I add Sonic's Rendezvous Band with Fred Sonic Smith, Patti's husband and genius behind MC5
One of my favorites is Gung-Ho; not a band song in the bunch. I use Strange Messenger in my classes for Black History month when I paly them a bunch of music.

I wanna say Sly And The Family Stone here. They really influence a lot of other musicians, great to listen to, fun to watch, and a lot of positive energy.

Mott The Hoople never got the accolades they were due. Most people regarded them as a one hit wonder with the Bowie penned All The Young Dudes but they had other great songs like All the Way From Memphis and many others.I have just about all their albums and Ian Hunter's lyrics are very Dylanesque and can be just as profound.Mick Ralphs is another unsung guitar great, his playing in .... Dudes is superb but his contribution to other albums is also great and goes relatively unrecognized.

For me it's simple, The Ventures, I think the did some really innovative stuff, especially for their time. Simply great.

Nils Lofgren. Most people only know him as part of the E-Street Band, but his solo
work and Grin recordings with his brother are top shelf productions.
