I never really liked the Coronado's that much. That's just me though. I think it was Fenders answer to the Gibby 335. It looks like it's in decent shape. Try it out, if it's solid and you like it and think it's a good deal, buy it.

That's a good price for a Coronado II and I'd jump on it if I had the bucks, it's at the low end of the book value.

The biggest problem for me was because it's a true hollow body with no center block, it would feed back pretty easily because of its hollow body construction at the volumes I played at the time. It has a bolt on neck which didn't bother me and DeArmond pickup that sounded great. The neck is pretty thin ans fast too.

That is a pretty decent price. That guitar could probably be flipped for a profit.

Most definitely.

Coronados never appealed, here, and one only rarely sees them at shows and frankly, 'can't ever remember seeing one on a stage.

What type of music do they do well and on what disk or group can one hear them?

What amps do they work well/best with?

I first discovered Coronados at Guitar Center a couple of years ago. I was browsing the semi-hollowbody/hollowbody section and I saw just the body of a Coronado and I thought it looked really cool (it was a Wildwood). Then I saw Fender on the headstock and "1968" on the tag and flipped out.

I played it and I liked it even more. The neck feels more like a Strat than any other hollowbody or semi-hollow I'd ever played which is great. The scale is the same as a Strat, not shorter like on a Gibson. The pickups sounded great too (to me at least). I'm not a huge fan of ES-335s because they sound fairly dark. I liked the Coronado's sound because it still sounds like a hollowbody, but brighter than usual. I've never played a Gretch or a Rickenbacker, but I bet it's closer to that than to an ES-335. In fact, Fender brought in one of the guys from Rickenbacker to help design the Coronado.

They wanted $1600 for it at Guitar Center, but after it was there for a few more months they dropped the price to $1300. I was dying for it, but at the time my Dad was out of work and there was no possible way I could afford it. It stayed at Guitar Center for about a year before it sold. It probably needed some fret work and it definitely needed a new nut, but it was still worth the price. Especially considered what some of them are going for on ebay. If you can snag one for $1300, do it.

I week after I played that one at Guitar Center I went to Austin and saw Jimmie Vaughan play one just like it at the National Guitar Workshop. Everyone was wondering what is was (90% of the audience were guitar players) and luckily I knew enough about Coronados to answer some questions about it. :)

And as far as feedback goes, he was playing through a Matchless stack and a Bassman. And it was pretty loud. Not ear bleeding loud, but definitely not at practice levels. There wasn't any feedback at all. Of course, he didn't use any pedals. I would imagine that it wouldn't be the best guitar in the world if you play distorted most of the time with pedals through a Marshall stack.

Do a search for Jimmie Vaughan on youtube or google, there's bound to be some clips of him playing his Coronado. He switched back and forth from Strats to the Coronado at the show I saw and on the recording you can really tell the difference. For lack of a better way to put it, the Coronado sounds kind of like what a Strat would sound like if a Strat were a hollowbody. Kind of like how an ES-335 sounds like what a Les Paul would sound like if it were a semi-hollowbody.

I think it would do great on any style of music where a huge bunch of distortion isn't required. Anything like Country, Blues, Reggae, Surf, etc. If I had one I'd probably even use it in the alternative rock band I'm in.

At Guitar Center I played it through a '65 Deluxe Reverb and it sounded awesome. I like Fender guitars through Fender amps. I think it would sound good with a Vox too. It would probably sound jazzier if I played it through my Peavey Classic 30 (which has a warm tone). I don't really think it would do well with a Marshall, just because they have that gritty overdrive to them which IMO sounds better with humbuckers and guitars like Les Pauls. But that's just my opinion.

Texas, that was one classy reply. Thank you.

A tip of the fur parka hat from metro Chicago, to you.

Brought up an intersting concept tho...a Semi-hollow modern Fender with long scale and Start pup layout and controls. Heck the 335 and LP both use the same control layout.

Hmm....

I checked out Alain's Coronado II she appears to be mint and in Wildwood- my absolute favourite finish for the Coronado-I really do need one-of course I need to win the lottery first.
