Hello fellow musicians.

Recently I started looking for a Tele, and I have played a Highway 1 with texas specials, a Highway 1 with high octane alnico pickups, and an American Special.

The Highway 1 with texas specials is $700 at my local music store.

The Highway 1 w high octane alnicos is almost $1000.

The American special is $800.

And then on sweetwater.com and ebay i found some American standards for right around $1000. With hard cases. So I'm leaning towards an american standard.

Does anybody have any input on my HWY1 vs American Special vs American standard dilemma?

I would buy the one with the best finish, Because for me, Half the fun of owning a Fender Guitar is the ease of being able to swap pickups and try new ones out when you want a little bit of a change in the sound. Look for the best feeling neck, and the finish on the body you like best. 8)

Hi djandrey_m and welcome...I was in the same position as you and I looked really hard and played many for over 2 weeks.

I ended up finding an '07 Hwy1 Tele with BL Keystones and really like the tones compared to the stock alnico IIIs.

Pickups are an easy swap, so I'd suggest playing a bunch and finding what feels best to you...then, if you don't like the pickups, swap 'em.

I found the frets and neck of the Hwy1 on par with my Am Std Strat.

Good luck!

Savalas.

Get Mike to do you're Tele shopping, he got a boster (black country slang, should be buster, meaning very good).

Seriously after hearing Mike's, I can't get my mind off them Keystone pickups. The depth and complexity of the guitars sound is really emphasised.

Maybe I'll go with an American Standard. They come w/ a case for only a couple hundred bucks more, and a good case is worth almost that amount.

I recently scored a very nice sounding Hwy 1 Tele with keystones after over two weeks of trying many.

Everyone is different, so it's probably best if you find your own, but if you want me to find you what I think is a good deal, tell me your budget, playing preferences and PIN to your bank acct.

I have an `09 Hwy 1 and like it but ... down the road I can see a `52 RI in my collection. Good luck with your decision, Teles are nice guitars.

Ha ha, PIN, sure , just gimme a sec here.... NOT

Budget: $1,000.

Playing preferences: I kinda dont know how to define my playing preferences other than in terms of the music that has been affecting my style lately, and i'm all over the place so its stuff like Death Cab, Franz Ferdinand, the Cure, radiohead, jimmy eat world, broken social scene, led zeppelin, etc..

In a couple days i'll be spending several weeks in Seattle, and there are lots more music stores than where i live, so i'll be going to music stores lots and trying lots of teles.

I've been looking on craigslist and stuff, and there aren't any good teles to be found! I guess there aren't any people who sell theirs once they buy it brand new.

Whoah that is one interesting Tele! That might be just what I want, because I'm also kinda torn in between a tele and a strat (although i am leaning more towards a tele).

I bet this one isnt USA made though.

I have a Deluxe Blackout Tele. Which is similar in configuration to the deluxe nashville, and having the signature Tele tones along with the versatility of a 3 pickup setup is awesome IMO.
They are MIM guitars, but don't let that scare you away from the deal. My Tele plays incredibly well, and I'd put it up against any Hwy1 (except Mike's with the Keystone pickups...lol) or Am. Std. and it would easily hold it's own. Just my opinion, YMMV. Good Luck.

If you are looking in the $1,000 range - take a look at the Baja Tele. In my opinion it's the best Tele that carries a MIM label. It will give you a wide variety of tones.

I've got an American Standard, a Highway One and a Nashville along w/ a bunch of other Tele's, so I can pretty well compare most of them side-by-side. If I could only have one of these Tele's to have it would be the Baja hands down over the American Standard, the Highway One or the Nashville. (Not to say that those aren't great Tele's, 'cuz they are, I just think the Baja is the best deal in the $600 - $1,000 price range.)

With the quality of guitars coming from Mexico the past few years I don't even hesitate at buying a MIM. Don't get locked in on only buying/looking at an American made Tele - you'll overlook some awesome guitars.
