the whole 2012 scenario regarding the Mayan calendar has been misinterpreted and hijacked by the media and doomsday theorists. It is just about the calendar resetting at year zero, which would be a celebration for the Mayans. Also from the Astronomy pov, even the Mayans being the great readers of the stars that they were would not have been able to predict an alignment of the sun and milky way in 2012. Theres no record of the Mayans truly predicting this. Again this is my understanding of the Mayan calendar from knowing many descendants of and ancestors of Mayan Indians and my discussions with them about this topic and others in general during my travels and time spent living in both South and Central America.

How the hell can the Sun be in line with the MilkyWay and have an effect on the Earth, when both the Earth and the Sun are contained in the MilkyWay??? Ok we may be on one of the spiral arms extending from the center of the galaxy, but your talking billions of light years, just to travel the length of one of those arms.

What genius thought that rubbish up? The same one who wrote that rubbish film?

the sun will be aligned in the center of the milky way in the 2012 winter solstice, sorry i didnt elaborate fully. something to the effect of the energy coming to earth from the center of the milky way being disrupted by the sun. I dont know as much about that aspect of it, just that the people I spoke with said their ancestors were very skilled astronomers, but even they couldnt have predicted accurately that this would cause the end of the world.

So in the 30 odd years its been since I read my last Carl Sagan or Astronomy book, our solar system has billions of lightyears? Last time I looked we were towards the tip of the right spiral arm (in most artistic impressions).

The sun is a sphere, it's always aligned to something, particularly when you consider were in a 3 dimensional no defined gravity center. Theres no real up or down, left/right, forward/back. Only position in relation to oneself and other objects. The sun would have to be aligned to the center and a 3rd body. As I said it's a sphere it's always aligned depending on the angle you look from. I can't believe that for the last however many years it's been orbiting the sun, this is the first time we've been on a plane so absolutely diametricaly opposed to the center of the galaxy that it will end our existence.

I also wonder what this mystical energy radiating from the center of the galaxy is and what is causing it? I honestly thought it was a huge black hole at the center, or maybe a star the size of which we've not seen before. A couple of million times the size, mass and density of Betelgeuse for example.

I find that very hard to believe. Not saying you're wrong BCB, I just don't see how that is possible in such a short time frame. I find this stuff absolutely fascinating and have since I was a kid wanting to go to space.

Yeah - that's what I was wondering too!

Nope, that leaves me none the wiser.

I dunno: I'm beginning to have my doubts about those Mayans. Perhaps I'll just carry on living life as if it is going to continue beyond 2012. Just in case...

Big Hairy Folk and forum user Martian don't need to worry about that kind of stuff.

We're immune.

I think were all reading from the same hymn book, Mayan's included.

The whole 2012 nonsense seems to be a bright idea of some marketing clerk who took a bit of astronomy and mixed it with a bit of astrology. The two have no business being used together.

You're kidding?!! The Mayans were using The English Hymnal? Well that comes as quite a surprise, I don't mind admitting.

Thing about these folks who predict the end of the world (and there seem to have been a mighty lot of them over the years!). They are always wrong.

Another thing: you never see them interviewed after the world hasn't ended. I want to see the look of stupid disappointment on their faces, but instead they just seem to sneak off and hide somewhere. I guess they feel pretty silly.

Ah well. It's all good clean fun.

Cheers - C

This is the article I was referring to in support of what I have gathered from my discussions with the Mayan descendants I have spoken with:

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/20 ... 2012_n.htm

Quote:
""For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies in Crystal River, Fla. To render Dec. 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."

Part of the 2012 mystique stems from the stars. On the winter solstice in 2012, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in about 26,000 years. This means that "whatever energy typically streams to Earth from the center of the Milky Way will indeed be disrupted on 12/21/12 at 11:11 p.m. Universal Time," Joseph writes."

The one thing that I do agree with and that was mentioned by the majority of them is also quoted in this article:

Quote:
""For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, "

That's what I think was the most likely meaning of the Mayan calendar ending at 2012, that a new cycle would begin...not that the world would end. All the people I have spoken with have agreed that their end of the calendar theory is something that has been hijacked and misinterpreted.

And I like you think it is all a big scam to sell books, magazines and for many people to cash in on the paranoia and mass hysteria.

Er... nope. I must be being pretty dense but I still don't see what is supposed to be aligned with what, in a way that it wasn't the day or the year before. What exactly is it that is supposed to happen for the first time in 26,000 years? Draw me a diagram.

And what is this energy that "typically" streams from the center of the galaxy to Earth?

BTW. I'm descended from the people who discovered gravity, electromagnetism, the atom and most important of all, champagne. Amongst thousands of other things. So I expect that makes me some sort of expert on the universe, huh? :D
