From my experience I agree with Niki, you want to get the room soundproof before you get it deadened or otherwise acoustically treated.

In the studio I built with a friend we used a technique we called the second-wall-system. we built a wall from two-by-fours, wooden boards and special high density rockwool. Between the real wall and the second wall a gap a foot wide was left empty.
windows were treated either with a second double-glased glass or filled with said rockwool and blocked altogether. We achieved a 62 db average sound blockage, with a pretty straight frequency response apart from some very low basses under 190 Hz.

I must warn you though, rockwool (and same goes for fiberglass) is a very VERY dangerous material. Small bits of fibre can get into your lungs and cause all sorts of future unhappiness, so wear good protection!

Cheers

Sounds to me like you're stuck, aside from hanging old carpet. Which ain't worth the hassle on it's own.

Nutter, the secondary wall system was superseeded a while back by the use of resilient bar. A staggered flange bar that fixes to the wall, pretty much doing the same in terms of stopping soundwave transfer through the wall, by making the soundwave pass through continualy differing densities of material (how I know body wood plays no part in tone). Using the same rockwool's and db rated boards, but literaly having them suspended from the existing walls, floor and ceiling.
Great German company called Knauf pioneered it's usage in the UK. Can't credit it to British Gypsum.

WCJ,
As this is a temp. set-up pending your move next year, why not a mixer and line connections and a decent set of headphones?

My 2 cents worth,
John.E

Waste of time, nowhere near dense enough to make a difference. The sound wave will still travel through the studs into the next room, or the joists into the floor above/below. That stuffs like cotton wool and will let all except heat pass, which is what it was made to do.

Absolutely right, Niki, and I'm aware I'm not the inventor of that system. It worked for us at the time and it seemed a better suggestion than egg-cartons, which, to my mind, would alas be noticeable if used as a guitar body material! only kidding mate. ;-)

Way Cool I am not sure putting heavy curtains up is going to help your neighbour or your bank account. Proper heavy stuff costs dosh! Probably cheaper to rent a practice room somewhere. Or go the headphone way like John.E suggested.

Cheerio -

Sounds like you made up your mind with the curtains... Heres one more idea.
Build yourself a "false wall" 2x2s with a cheap backer... then use ceiling tiles or foam board to cover... tack the whole thing in place... take down when you move...

He's already nay-sayed that one Bill.

Curtains are a waste of money unless you're putting em on a window.

egg boxes... and ull get buff doing it... lol or you can use carpet, anything that will absorb some of the sound... you need to see how much reverb you want to retain in the room as well if you are looking at perhaps doing some recording... also remember that its your doors and windows that pose the biggest problem... other methods for the walls can be hanging blankets, carpets, rugs, fiber board... there is also a foam that is fairly cheap - convulated egg crate foam - i use carpets and i works pretty well...

gud luk...

Don't use egg cartons. They not only not work that well, but are also a fire hazard. Carpet works half decent.

I guess I was thinking of something that could be tacked up easy as carpet or curtains... could even glue the foam or tiles to 4x8 sheets of plywood and tack that in place????
