What about Hendrix.

If all that guitar smashing and playing with his teeth (which sounded awful) or behind his back wasn't a stage prop, I don't know what is.

Ah but then again what Jimi was doing was real as he was really playing with his teeth and really wrecking the guitar, these guys are just creating an artificial illusion to impress the audience into think that they are high powered rock stars whereas Jimi was a high powered rock star even if played with a Strat and a lone Fender Twin as he did at jams at the Cafe Wha? with Jim Morrison et al.BTW I know what the W word is as we use many of the British euphenisms here in Newfoundland as 95% of us are of British descent and the guy I played with should have had a W tattooed on his forehead lol.

It was just a bit of fake shammery that didn't sound good. Infact it detracted from his usuall out of tune live abominations, to make the audience focus on the fact that he was too stoned to play.
Hence the longwinded nonsense repetetive solo's too.

I don't see that as being any kind of mastery at all. A recorded master, yes. Sadly lacking as a live performer though. Imagine if you were in the audience for one of the many gigs where he just unplugged halfway through the second song. Said 'we aint getting it together, sorry'. And then walked offstage.

As some of you know I was watching many bands from the stage at Download festival this year including Slash, AC/DC, Aerosmith (the photos are somehwere on here). Believe me, EVERYONE does it.

I believe Pink Floyd are the master showman of lighting and effects, and those who pay to see them expect it.

Exactly.

You wouldn't pay to go see the Royal Shakespear Company perform The Merchant of Venice with no stage props or background would you? I wouldn't.

Everybody uses props and always has done. I was watching the Josephine Baker vids on Youtube earlier. Right back to 1925, she wowwed the world with her erotic dancing (we'd call it everyday) at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Did that detract from her songwriting skills, not in the least. It was however nothing more than a prop that she included in her stage act. Much like Hendrix and Townsend doing stupid things to guitars. Never mind Moon and Daltery.

Well to sum up this whole discussion, I just don't see the connection between Erotic Dancing, Playing the guitar with your teeth, or a lightshow with putting Fake Amps on the stage to make it seem that the band is larger than they really are. All the other things are real, and do require a certain degree of skill to perform them. I still think as the original post described that Fake Amp Stacks = A Zero not a Hero. As for Rush with the Washing Machines and Chicken cookers, I don't think anyone was under the impression that they were playing their instruments through them. Like I said, I enjoy a good performance as much as anyone else, And lighting and effects are cool too. But when a band puts up a bunch of Fake Equipment to imply that the crowd is getting more than the band is really willing to give, Than that is a band of posers. 8)

Sounds to me like a good minded band who are more interested in continuing to give to their fans, rather than go deaf or suffer the constant hell of tinitus.

How is the show any louder than it is with Fake amps??? I didn't see any speakers in them, I guess I don't get it because I don't buy a ticket to see a bunch of fake amps. I want to hear the band play, They don't need to go on an ego trip for me. Just play the music with all they got. How can you go any more deaf when the music is as loud as it is, The fake amps don't make it any louder. Excuse me guys, But thats called POSING by every definition. 8)

Clearly the chicken cookers have mics on them. 8)
Well I'll pay to see Geddy Lee sing into a bar-b-que grill on their next tour.

Because fake or real on stage speakers are behind you, the soundpressure hits you directly. PA speakers are infront of you, well off to the sides. You don't get bombarded by their sound. It's direct pressure onto the ears that causes the problem.

People may say 100watts is loud, but believe me theres a big big difference between 2 100watt full stacks (4 4x12s) and a wall of 6 4x12s. Infact until you've stood infront of a plexi fullstack on 10, you won't realize exactly how damaging it is. Trust me you'll never feel ear pain like that top cab, it's like shoving a spike into your ear.

Niki, Look at the picture on the first post, There is no speakers in the cab, Its not even a cab, It's a facade. Hey if you think its an honorable thing for the band to do and enjoy going to a show to see 1,000 fake stacks at an AC/DC show, than more power to ya, Enjoy the show, But for me I don't go for it so much, Maybe when I was 15 or 16 I might have thought it was that important, But these days, not so much. Peace . 8)
