Hello just bought a gently used fender mini strat for a gift for a young child with soft case, amp, cables, guitar and music stands but no set up instructions were included.

Due to financial reasons, in lieu of lessons, Where to purchase the best instructional DVD for around $10 ? Also what is the best type of headphones to purchase?

Actually, Any advice would be welcome please. We are not musically inclined.

For headphones I would recommend either Sennheisser or Sony. Bit pricey but great quality. But the Skullcandy headphones are also great especially for young kids.

And I think that you should be able to find all manuals for fender products on top of this page under support.

Good luck.

I'd recommend taking lessons instead of using a dvd if at all possible, you can't ask a dvd questions if you don't understand something.

my family was never musically inclined, but my grandpa insisted that i pursue my intesest in music. so i started with $300 on my birthday one year for a guitar, amp, books, dvd, strap, picks, cables, etc. for the most part i taught myself all i know, but there is still sooo much that i dont know and im dying to learn it. i really wish my folks would have helped me invest in lessons, i honestly believe i would be much farther along if i had a better start.

Welcome and it's always good to here about youngsters getting into music on any level. As far as lessons, they are great for starting out, lots to be learned. But if funds are short,(which happens to alot of us this time of year) you can also find lots of good info on music theory just by duing a search.

Ditto! And the lessons are free. If you like what you see you might consider donating that $10 to Justin - money well spent IMHO.

thanks to all of you for the welcome and the free sites you have passed along. We will get going on that after Christmas.

how do you mark your profile, so you do not receive an email with EVERY post?

My little son has been "air guitaring" to Jonas for over a year and I scraped together and saved some money to get his first Fender,
for those that are recommending lessons, how do you get financial
support so your child can "start" his interest in music. I was
quoted $22 for each half hour ONE time per week, what the
heck is that going to do?

you dont need official lessons. learn to tune the guitar and start learning chords, scales and learn to read tabs so you can play songs you like

tuning info http://www.wikihow.com/Tune-a-Guitar

heres a good little tuner http://www.guitarcenter.com/Korg-GA-1-G ... 1449479.gc

chords and scales... http://www.chordbook.com/guitarchords.php

for chords, click Guitar Chords (at the top), pick a ROOT, then TYPE, then STRUM (near the body of the guitar)

for scales, click Guitar Scales (at the top), pick a KEY, then SCALE, click GO, then PLAY (near the body of the guitar)

how to read tab...

http://www.12weekguitarcourse.com/How_T ... ar_Tab.pdf

UG has tons of free tabs. you can search songs by name or band name

There are couple of ways to handle this situation:

1) The Fender Forum software will only send you one notification until you read the topic again. So if you wait a couple of days (even though there might have been a dozen posts) you'll only get that one notification. If you use the link provided in the email message the forum software will take you to point where the new messages begin.

2) If you don't want any email messages at all scroll down to last message on a topic page. Just below the last message on the left hand side of the page you'll see two buttons marked NEW TOPIC and POST REPLY. Under the two buttons you'll see the phrase “stop watching this topic”. Click on this phrase.

Conversely, if you want to get email notifications for topics you wish to follow, look in the same place on the page and click on “Watch this topic for replies”.

And lastly, welcome to the forum!
