You cant compare him to other modern blues artists because for one he is more technical, two he DOESN'T SOUND LIKE SRV, three he has a british flavor, four he is kinda gospely ( well so is Jonny Lang ), 5 he is more of a heavy rocker ( hes in a new heavy rock band called Black Country Communion with Glenn Hughes, Jason Bonham, and the keyboardist from Dream Theater ), 6 he plays Les Pauls and British style amps, not Strats and Fender style amps, as well as more gain, and 7 he can play OTHER STYLES. Nevin1985, its okay if you don't care for Joe, as everybody has their own opinion, but don't go on and on that he sucks and no one should like him. He worked hard to get where he is at right now. Express your opinion in a nice way. You always criticize people because of their opinions. I do not care for Mayer like many of you do, and I do feel that he ain't as proficient as Bonamassa and others, but a lot of you like his blues stuff, and love his playing. He is a good player, and he is excellent at what he does, but his music just aint me, you know. Just my 2 cents. Happy Holidays!

It's not any player's playing alone that gets them noticed these days, it's thier songwriting, and a BIT of luck. The reason Mayer and Bonamassa are as well known as they are is because they write songs that are original and GOOD, and speak to a particular audience segment. And they got heard. (Probably worked furiously hard to get heard)

There are indeed, hundreds if not thousands, of players around the world (some on this forum, no doubt) who are 'better', or 'just as good' as Mayer, and Bonamassa, and SRV and Clapton, even. But they don't (can't- probably) write songs that people in general, will grow to love. Maybe some that are 'good', or 'good enough'. But not great songs.

Just what I have noticed when I hear originals by local players who can play the hell out of a guitar. I have noticed this trend in several places.

mismatching knobs....what were epiphone thinking?!?

You don't need matching knobs. I used a knob from a Tele on the volume control of my Strat for the longest time. I could do volume swells better that way. It just suited my style of playing better than the stock Strat knob.

Straight up comedy. Now you are just being ridiculous. Hate him or love him, the guy is here to stay and has cemented his place amongst the legends.

He played a lot with Danny Gatton in NY and then got a chance to be the opening act for BB. That was his "lucky break".

If he actually played an Epi then I might consider it....but alas he doesn't. Much like Slash doesn't play an Epi either.

It doesn't really matter what they play, we will always sound like ourselves. The crucial point is how it feels, plays and sounds for your style of playing.
