mornin all!!! it's not a problem but it is if you know what i mean. i have lots of EXTRA cash this month. the pay period gives one extra check this month and i worked several weekends last month plus 2 days on my vacation. i also got paid last night.
what to do?
i'm not one to save money although i have a savings account. christmas shopping is done. i really don't need any gear. i have all my hunting gear also. i really just feel the need to spend some money and help stimulate the economy. (thats what i tell my wife).
there is only one thing i really want. a device that will let me record a few tracks and save them on the computer. something very simple but decent quality. kong has recommended a set up but i'm too stupid to understand. i'd love to share my playing with ya'll. the criticism and advice will do nothing but help me out as a guitarist.
I AM COMPUTER ILLITERATE.

time to clean the garage and enjoy my last paid day off this week

Get a zoom handheld recorder (there are many models in $100-$400). Some do audio only some do video and audio. Zoom also records in stereo on a tiny memory card and you can export an mp3 or WAV to somebody's computer to mix it for you.

Another idea is to get a little jam in a tiny box BOSS device

Hi jeebus,

You may want to check out a POD from Line 6. It has amp and speaker cab modeling, different mic selections, eq, and effects like delay, reverb, fuzz, and many other effects all built in. You can use it as a stereo or mono effects pedal into your amp, like a preamp, or as a stand alone practice box using headphones so as not to disturb anyone else. It also has a usb to connect to a computer for recording, with or without an amp. The effects and presets are infinitely adjustable and able to be updated via the internet. I think that it is one of the best gear additions that you could have, very versatile. Here's a recording that I did just using the POD XT and headphones (no amp or mic). The playing isn't that great, but it might give you an idea of what a POD can do. :)

Guitar Center link with some info and different POD models.

thanx and i thought your playing was great. i'm kinda diggin' the boss micro br-4. the built in rythym section is a huge plus. most reviews say it is a biotch to figure out. i'm quite sure it comes with a manual and thats what smart folks like my wife are for. you know, to actually read it.
i'll think about it a bit and wait to see if someone has a better suggestion.
thanx

How about a boss BR600? seems to be a pretty popular one. And they're lightweight and easy to take from place to place.

If you like recording direct to a PC or Mac, there are tons of software of all kinds. Cakewalk comes to mind. And it's easy to use because it's all graphic in windows. All you need is an interface that you plug into your computer via USB and plug your guitar/instrument/mic direct into the interface (Tascam makes a variety of them).

Oh, in most cases the interface has the recording software included so no need to buy a massive recording/production software unless you plan to do professional stuff like studio editing, mixing and recording.

Anyway that's a way to start. Who knows, you might end up adding more components to your system with all that money to help stimulate the economy and someday become a professional making some $$$ from it.

i got a tascam dp004 i believe. can't even get one simple riff recorded. i mean really, i am undoubtedly the dumbest human being on the face of the earth. i'm going to give it another full afternoon of frustration, cussing and eventually heavy drinking. these little "easy to use" devices are made for aliens to use.
good thing i've got 30 days to return it.

You could probably look on YouTube and find a good tutorial on how to use it.

I agree, the Tascam DP004 is a stressor. I prefer to go direct into a interface (set the levels) and do the recording with a mouse on the computer vs a console with buttons and knobs that you must use in sequence.

I wish I had the skills to use one of them recording consoles.

Depending on how much extra money you've got, I'd recommend an Apple Macbook or Mac Mini to run Garage Band on. Garage Band comes with the computer and it's super duper easy to figure out. Just get a Line 6 Toneport or something to allow you to plug the guitar or mic an amp into the computer. It has drum loops and if you can play guitar you can probably wing it on bass so there's your band.

The rhythm guitarist in one of the bands I'm in has one of those Tascam recorder/mixer/CD burner things. I'm sure it's way cheaper than a computer, but it wasn't easy to figure out. It took us about three hours messing with it before we could record anything, and my Dad is usually great at figuring out anything technical.

jeebus

keep that tascam DP004. its a sweet littl eunity. i was about to get one myself then i ran across the Boss Micro BR. damn thing just rocks.
anyways, there is a great how-to on youtube for your recorder and there
is also a DVD out there on the net for it as well.
you got the right stuff setting there before you.
just relax and work the owners manual one freakin page at a time if you have to. the DP 004 is perfect size to transport around also.
relax and learn that thing, your gonna love it friend.
