I love the sound of les pauls, but I can't stand the feel. My strat is infintely more comfortable to play than any les paul.

I was thinking of ordering a custom one from warmoth with LP-like specs:
Mahogany body (chambered to reduce the weight), maple top, HH pickup configuration

Has anyone ever built a strat that tries to emulate an LP? How did it turn out?

i would really like to do this as well but i think if you chamber the body you will lose alot of that les paul like sound.you may also think about an ebony fretboard, and using a hard tail bridge.

I forgot to mention the hardtail. The Warmoth site says that the chambering improves sustain, which I thought might make up for the sustain lost by the bolt-on neck. Thoughts?

No worries dude. It does seem counter intuitive. But I guess maybe the extra resonance or something helps.

Yeah, mostly just the Studio and some of the specialties, like maybe the Robot and I think the BFG. I don't think you'd find a chambered Standard.
However, I could be wrong. It's happened a few times before

Just checked Gibson USA website. Yep, I was wrong on the Robot. It's solid, but the BFG is chambered.

To get that LP sound you're looking for, go with a mohogany body/neck. Ebony Fingerboard and throw in some Burstbuckers or some PAFs and there you go. From my experience if a guitar is properly setup, a bolt on neck will not make a huge difference in sustain. And I can't speak on chambered bodies cuz all of my guitars are solid bodies.

A black ash body will give you heaps of sustain but you can count on it weighing over 10 lbs.

RE: Gibson attemt at a strat

Back in the 80s Gibson had a model called the Maurader which had modified single coil pickups exotic wiring and a flying V headstock. They made several models of this, and from what I understand they were tring to get strat playser to X-over to Gibson. It was a nice guitar and some say it was designed for studio work. Nevertheless, it still can be found for around $600. It was well crafted and came in various woods and pickup designs. Later in the 90's they attempted to get strat players to X-over with the Blues Maker (or somthing). It looked like a Melody Maker and has single coils and a 25.5" scaled neck. But that failed too and they can be found for about $500. These were some well crafted guitars and for a price of a USA Gibson that's a good deal.

I've constructed many guitars in my time where the owner selected the culmination of the parts to mimic a Les Paul. From my experience, the closest they ever got was a "Carvinish" playing and sounding guitar. This is by no means a 'knock' on Carvin as they do indeed produce a superior instrument. I'm merely pointing out that if it isn't an outright Les Paul, it isn't. I would look more towards high powered pickups if it is the Les Paul sound and sustain you are after with a Strat and let your amp do the rest (tube preferred). FWIW, DiMarzio became a millionaire successfully pioneering this concept. As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.
